Chapter 21: Flattened
Officer Blythe crept along with his half of the troops. They were a level above whatever was going on downstairs and following the tracks of the, things, that had split off on this level.
“You see them, try to surround them before they notice us” He ordered in a hush whisper through his clenched teeth, “If they notice us though everyone opens up”
His troops merely nodded as they crept along in a half crouch, eyes and ears hyper alert to any sound. Some of the men crossed themselves or make other quasi religious mutterings. He had to admit it but he could see their point, even if he didn’t replicate their actions. Whatever had happened to make these, cyber freaks, had taken out or converted everyone, or nearly everyone in the factory and they were presently chasing the bastards.
Officer Blythe wasn’t quite sure what they’d find when they caught up to the bastards. He didn’t expect to find them digging however. Whole lot of them were on their knees clawing at the concrete or other support material that this building was made of, kicking up enough dust in the process that they were building up their own smoke screen.
After a moment of confusion, he waved his hand and his officers started their encirclement.
Cybele was very glad she had worn hearing protection. After the shootout was over and the last of the freaks was slumping against the floor she could still almost feel the noise in her skin and fur. The survivor, it seemed, could relate. A young fox male was curled up into the tiniest ball she’d ever seen an adult adopt, had his hands clamps like vices over his ears and was quite clearly shaking.
She crept over to him and touched his arm to get his attention and had to jump back to avoid the short salvo of panicked punching that followed.
“ITS OK!” she said, “I’m the cops, its ok they’re dead”
The man shuddered for a moment looking up at her, a momentary look of relief followed by a combination of exhaustion and what little determination the man had left. He pointed down the hall beyond the doors he had guarded and towards a passageway with an oddly green glow coming from the end of it.
“Help them” He said almost stuttering, “Demon!”
“Help who?” Cybele tried to sound calm to keep him from panicking more, “What do you mean a demon? Like these things?”
“Two girls… a… a snow leopard, and a…” The male paused before continuing, “and an Angel. They’re in there with a demon”
“What kind of Demon?”
He shook his head, “Don’t know”
“Stay here” Cybele straightened. She wasn’t sure exactly what the man meant by ‘angel’ and ‘demon’ in this context, though she had a guess that ‘demon’ meant more of these things. She raised her voice to her troops, “We have two females in the room ahead with a hostile of some sort. No time for tactics we need to help them now. MOVE!”
She rushed forward with the other officers hot on her heels. If anything they seemed substantially less nervous now that they had a second ago. Not too surprising when they had just taken out a group of the things, they suddenly seemed like less of a massive threat.
They burst into the green room guns drawn and quickly dropped their jaws. The light was coming from an undulating whole in, well in nothing, and in addition to that, the room looking like a carnarium of dislocated body parts and wrecked equipment. Either a lot of people died here or were brought here afterwards. Aside form all that the most eye catching part of the display was a semi translucent monstrosity of teeth and claws roaring and slashing at a naked woman with wings and a golden sword.
The woman had evidently already down a good deal of damage to the monstrosity, despite its not entirely solid appearing shape she could see ragged edges and gouges likely made by the sword the woman was swinging. Many of the wounds seemed like they should be very damaging, but it wasn’t stopping the thing from moving on between two and six legs and attacking with as many arms. It was shockingly hard to tall how many of what part the thing had moment to moment, but what wasn’t hard for Cybele, or her officers, in the least was which one they needed to fill with as much lead as they possibly could.
The bullets hit the beast hard, most of them at least. A certain percentage seemed to pass straight through its body, but others made contact. The impacts blasted holes and took off chunks of flesh just like any other creature. Unlike any other creature it didn’t go down when their volley ended and they had to reload, instead it turned to them and roared angrily. It made to charge before four feet of metal was very angrily inserted into its side by the angel woman. The beast made a pained yell and swiped at the woman who let go of her sword to dodge back. She flapped and backed up giving the beast space.
“Shoot it!”
They didn’t need more encouragement and unloaded a second volley at the creature, blasting apart more and more of it. It seemed to really be weaker now and staggered, not able to fully get its footing against the lead wind. Even though it was slowed though didn’t mean it was stopped and it charged. Despite all the wounds of the clearly suffering monstrosity it was still going to get to them, at least it would have had the ceiling not collapsed.
A creaking and crunching noise precipitating pits of plaster and concrete falling to the floor before larger chunks and eventually the entire level above fell into the room, they were in. With it came the sprawled-out bodies of numerous cyber zombies and some police officers as well.
Cybele didn’t see very much of it from her vantage point on the underside of a slab of concrete. She couldn’t see much of anything, but she knew she was banged up bad, she couldn’t even feel her left leg. She twisted and managed to poke her head out form the side of the slab to get a look at the situation. Somehow the floor above fell in on them letting the freaks through, along with some of Officer Blythe’s men. The cops weren’t in good shape. Especially not her own on the receiving end of the collapse, but luckily it seemed not all the officers fell. While the monsters gathered themselves an began trying to attack anyone still moving, on the floor above was a loose ring of uniforms unloading on them with everything they had.
Just like with her own men the freaks didn’t last too long against sustained gunfire and started to go down, all except for something under the concrete that had no god’s be damned excuse to still be moving, but it was. The thing stood up through the concrete, literally through it, its body seemed o phase through the solid material. The concrete it passed through did move and shift but more like it was a suggestion on whether to contact the thing or not, similar to the bullets that only sometimes made contact with it when they passed through it. The sword however didn’t take things as a suggestion and was still firmly lodged through the mass of the monster.
Blythe’s troops froze at the sight of the thing as it pulled one had free from the concrete, then the other, but Cybele didn’t’ see, or remember much of what happened next. The thing was very close to her when the ceiling came down, and was still very close. She got a good look at its shifted and reforming almost-flesh, how it didn’t quite had a definite form and how the parts of it that were in shadow from the green light simply vanished from sight. Then when it lifted its arm she felt a tug, then she felt herself moving, then she felt completely mind wrecking agony. Her left may have been pinned by the concrete, but it was crushed by the monster as it lifted her by the unfortunate limb. Her leg didn’t have the luxury of sometimes passing through her surroundings and damn it all she swore she could feel every pebble as it tore through her. She screamed and screamed as she was lifted by the leg, now likely broken in more places than she could count, her arms flailed, and her body shook with the pain of her injury. She simply couldn’t think any more to do anything of use.
The last thing she saw before consciousness mercifully left her was the angel ripping her sword from the tattered beast’s torso and bringing it down on its heads.
