Sea otters almost always give birth to 1 pup. There are documented events where they have twins, but unfortunately caring for one pup is often a lot of work so she is forced to leave one behind. The good news is female sea otters adopt abandoned pups too, so there is a chance an orphaned pup could survive with a random otter that sees him/ her alone.
