One of the oldest methods of harnessing the arcane in Gaius is runework. Created by Urat Linle and Abziamat as the gods were teaching magic to the early mortal races, the runes by themselves don't actually have power, but as the people of Gaius need to subconsciously hypnotize themselves to harness the arcane, they work as a channel for the spellcaster to imbue an object with spells and enchantments.
This is actually a major factor for why melee weapons are still widely used in the modern day despite firearms becoming common place. It is very difficult to enchant a small bullet, and runic engravings affect the gun itself instead than the ammo inside, and the demons and devils that plague the world tend to be fast and hardy with a penchant for getting up close and personal.
