“And…there! Finally!” After hours of work, the last bolt is finally tightened on the experimental engine that needed repairs after an extensive test flight has been reassembled. Wotokay gets up from his workbench and starts putting things away, yawning. He looks at the clock: 3 AM. “Damn, better try to get some sleep in before those Air Force guys come back for their parts.” Wotokay hops away, heading upstairs and into the office’s lobby, which also serves as a makeshift living space for Wotokay after hours. He shuts off the lights then flops over into bed, and the hangar falls silent.
The silence doesn’t last for long, however, as the sound of a thermal lance fills the hangar, followed by the clashing of part of the hangar door falling to the ground. The light pouring in from outside is broken up by the silhouette of a man walking through the hole in the hangar door, who scurries across the hangar floor towards the work bench Wotokay was just at. He approaches the bench, when suddenly the silence is broken yet again by the blaring of an alarm. The man panics, grabs some parts and starts running for the door. As he runs, two mechanical arms drop from the ceiling and grab him by both legs at the same time, then pull him up, leaving him dangling by his ankles. Another arm picks up and holds the part of the door that was cut off, while another arm welds it back into place.
“Help! Get the hell out of here!” The burglar yells and tries to break free but the arms hold firm, leaving him dangling. Soon, the arm that welded the door shut shoots down from the ceiling, this time with a syringe filled with a black, viscous liquid. An arm comes down and holds the burglar’s arm in place while the syringe-arm quickly injects the viscous liquid. The burglar is then dropped to the ground, but he does not get up as he is writhing in pain from what’s happening. The pain quickly subsides as the painkillers take effect and the pain is replaced by a numb, tingling sensation throughout his body. White hairs start poking through his skin while he tries running for the door. He gets the door and finds it locked, with no other way out as the hairs grow thicker and thicker. The burglar looks down at his arms and pulls his shirt off quickly to reveal a thick coat of white fur, with grey stripes down the sides of his torso.
“What the-am I dreaming? Am I actually dead and just imagining this?” He stares in awe as his fingernails grow longer and sharper, sinking back into the nailbeds and forming large claws. He can feel a pressure in his back as two hunks of metal appear and start pushing out and growing longer. He looks back to see two white, metal plates growing out of his shoulder blades. His shoes feel tighter as his feet grow and toenails start to grow longer, thicker, and sharper. His shoes are soon torn to shreds as his feet and claws burst right through them, relieving the pressure. His tailbone starts extending and pushing his loose pants down, forming a fluffy white tail, tipped with grey.
The burglar looks back at his growing tail and feels it. “Is…that a tail? What the fuck is happening to me?” The tail seems to widen and then grow some hunks of metal itself, which at first grow out vertically, then split off to grow horizontally in both directions. On the grey tip of his tail, the letters G550 appear in black paint, followed by two metal cylinders forming under the horizontal stabilizers.
“The tail…G550…this looks a lot like a plane!” The cylinders grow longer and thicker, then hollow out and split into fan blades, becoming large jet engines. His new tail starts swishing around, though it feels really heavy at first. After a few moments, he quickly adjusts to its weight as well as new muscles growing in, and soon he’s able to move his tail easily. The metallic plates continue growing longer and longer, as his body grows several inches taller. At the end of these appendages, they grow upward, finally forming a pair of metal wings on his back. White fur spreads up to the burglar’s neck, soon covering his head and merging with his hair. The top of his head is covered in grey fur, while the lower half is covered with white fur. A glass visor appears on his face, followed by his ears growing longer and stretching out. They slowly move to the top of his head and take on a rigid, swept-back shape, while his jaw stretches forward and nose flattens against the end of his growing muzzle, and the changes stop.
The visor that the burglar is wearing boots up and shows a digital display, first showing a boot menu, then displaying a lot of statistics. Finally, it rests on a screen showing local time and weather, engine information, and fuel levels. “Woah…what kinda tech is this?”
The door to the hangar opens, the lights come on, and the alarm suddenly stops. In the doorway stands Wotokay, looking unusually smug. He walks up to the burglar who is still looking stunned. “What’s the matter, first time getting transformed?”
“I-Wh-Uh…yes?”
Wotokay chuckles, “It’s fine! Everyone’s first time is a little scary, especially when they’ve been caught illegally breaking into my hangar! Now then, what’s your name?”
“Uh…D-David!”
“Well, David, you know what’s going to happen from here? You’re going to work off your debt to me. You broke my door and damaged the parts I was working on! That’s gonna take a lot of time and work to fix. I’d say you’ll probably have to hang around here and help out for…at least a few months.”
“Wha-what about the police? Don’t I get a trial or anything?”
“Do you really want to gamble with getting a felony on your record?”
“Well…uh…no…”
“Mhm, I thought so. Now then, it’s 3:30 AM and I’ve got to turn in these parts you broke in 4 hours. So, we’re gonna get to work. You’re gonna help me put these parts back together and make sure they work.”
“But I don’t—”
“Don’t worry, you don’t need to know how all this stuff works, just do what I tell you and it’ll be fine!”
“Well, alright.”
“Good, let’s get started!” Wotokay and David start working throughout the rest of the night repairing the damaged engine. With his help, Wotokay is able to make the repairs and restore functionality to the engine. After the parts are handed over to the Air Force, Wotokay and David spend the rest of the day getting to know each other better.
A few weeks pass, and Wotokay decides that it’s time for David to get to know his new body a bit better. “Say, David, you wanna learn how to fly?”
“What, like a plane? You know how to fly a plane? I thought you just worked on them!”
“No, silly, I mean with your engines! They aren’t just for show, after all!”
“Well…sure! That sounds a little scary, but fun!”
“Alright then, let’s go!” Wotokay leads David outside and takes him out a good distance from the hangar. “Okay, now just focus on your engines, and just…well it’s hard to describe but just kind of concentrate on them, try to imagine the fans spinning!”
“Alright…” David tries to focus on his engines, but they don’t move. He grunts and groans as he concentrates harder, but nothing happens. “I-I can’t do it!”
“Yes, you can! Here, maybe it’ll help if I turn your engines a bit…” Wotokay goes over and sticks his paw into one of his engines, and manually turns the fan some. “There, you should be able to feel it moving! Focus on that feeling!”
“Yeah, I can feel it! Okay, I think I got it!” Wotokay backs away to a safe distance, then gives a thumbs up. David concentrates again, and soon the fans in his engines start spinning faster and faster! Soon, a loud whining noise is heard as his engines reach idle speed.
“Good job! Now, straighten your body, spool up your engines and you should be able to take off!”
David nods and then straightens his body out, looking like a statue. He looks up to the sky, focuses on his engines and the whining grows louder. Wotokay steps back some more and takes out his ear plugs. Soon, David quickly lifts off the ground and shoots into the sky, rapidly gaining height. He panics, and starts wobbling around in the air, then crashes to the ground with a loud THUD. Wotokay runs up to him, looking worried.
“Are you alright? Looks like you feel quite a bit there!”
David sits up, rubbing his head. “Y-yeah, I think I’m okay, I don’t really feel all that hurt!”
“That’s probably shock, you fell from, like, twenty feet! I can tell already you look a bit beat up, let’s get you inside, I think that’s enough for one day.” Wotokay helps David to his feet and brings him back into the hangar, calling the airport fire department to send an ambulance over. While the paramedics examine David, Wotokay checks on his engines, thankfully not finding anything broken.
A few days pass and David wants to try again, so he manages to talk Wotokay into taking him out and trying again. This time, he focuses more on controlling his engines and his various control surfaces, then attempts a takeoff. He soars into the air, and with some wobbling around, manages to stay airborne! He flies around low over the airport and manages to aggravate the air traffic controllers until he’s forced down under threat of having an F-14 from the local air force base intercept him. He touches down with a bit of a rough landing outside Wotokay’s hangar, laughing about the incident.
“Well, maybe I won’t be able to go flying for a bit!”
“Heh, yeah, maybe I should have gotten clearance first…oh well! Nobody got hurt. Now then, we really should get back to work. How’s your legs doing?”
“Good, I can walk and run just fine now.”
“Excellent, let’s get back to work, then.”
Over time, David really seems to enjoy Wotokay’s company, and proves to be a fast learner and a handy assistant around the hangar. He even offers to take up security patrols at night, scaring off intruders with his loud engines and generally intimidating-looking body. Soon enough, Wotokay decides that he’s served his time and is ready to let him go.
“Well, David, it’s been a good three months now, I think you’ve well worked off your debt. You’re free to go.”
“Wait, really? Um…can-can I stay like this?”
“Of course! I don’t really know how to turn you back anyways!”
“Oh, heh, alright. Well…I guess I’ll see you around, maybe…”
“Yeah, maybe!” Wotokay waves as David starts to walk out of the hangar. David makes it to the door and stops, then walks back up to Wotokay.
“Um, I was thinking…would you like an assistant full-time? I kinda got used to being here and, well, since I’ve been here three months my apartment’s gone and I don’t exactly have a place to go back to…”
“Oh, well, I suppose I could use an assistant! As long as you don’t mind sleeping on a couch still!”
“I’ve been doing it for the past 3 months and it’s better than sleeping in my car while I look for a new apartment.”
“Well, in that case, welcome aboard officially! I’ll get the paperwork started, for now you can get started organizing the tools!”
“Alright, I’ll get right on that!”
And so, David begins his new life working as a hangar assistant for Wotokay, living in and sharing the hangar office space, at least until he can get a new apartment.

"I don't really know how to turn you back anyways" elicited a giggle out of me—maybe more than a giggle!
Can't say I would've been in as good a demeanor as Wotokay was if I was so rudely awoken a half-hour into a 4-hour sleep, but maybe having a new plane-dragon assistant would change things.
It was fun read; thanks for sharing it (and thanks to Wotokay for commissioning it)!
