Despite how simple it looks, the horn bash is a rather advanced maneuvre. Striking with just the right force and at just the right angle to effectively attack the enemy without causing significant damage to yourself takes a lot of learning, and trial and error for this kind of thing is...painful. Personally, I like hooking my horns underneaththem and 'scooping' up - knocking smaller foes into the air, and larger ones onto their backs. The momentum then carries my upper body up a little, leaving me ripe for a quick bite at the former, and a stomp on the latter.
