ever considered adding some kind of interaction between the character and the reader? on a beach setting you could draw a glaceon holding a saying "there wasn't any ice cream on sale at the bar, but don't worry, i know an even more refreshing alternative..."
also you should try drawing cuaracters showing different emotions,
for example, a beatrice santello from night in the woods looking bored and stating something related to her characters, such as "you went to college, Mae, you should be the one telling me why a lizard has bigger breasts than you"
