Quick wits could win a fight, but bad luck could make it worse, and luck is something one cannot truly account for, and no amount of preparation could take into account just how far that luck could carry. Backed into a corner, no room for escape, and facing down a horde of scoundrels, surely bad luck has led to a poor fate. But to chronicle the events, one must first witness what has led up to this point.
Achilles, a young adventurer, eager to see the world like his father and his before him, but a bit too eager sometimes. Having wandered through every street and hall of his home city, those safe walls felt constricting at times, and the few trips outside their security weren't the most exciting. He longed to make a difference for more than the home he'd been cooped up in, but warnings of the changing world outside the walls stayed his feet from stepping out on his own. The world couldn't be so bad that business flowed freely and the soldiers came back with no more than the occasional scar or more rarely a fallen warrior. But his father served as an elite soldier, seeing the lands the common ranks wouldn't dare to venture into, and fighting foes that would route armies. But his father didn't want that life for his son, even disapproving of him even joining the city watch, as he himself never wished for the duty he upheld.
It took a foolish decision for him to question his actions, now alone in a deadly situation with naught but his father's teachings, a handful of imperfect techniques, and a stoic resolve in the face of certain death. His resolve had not faltered in his first few adventures, with many brushes with the void to wear down his unrefined edges. But a string of misfortune that began with his undertaking of this contract could be the plunge into the beyond.
