Six children escape their abusive adopted father to study under the only human of ancient times to gain the power to overthrow their oppressor. Inspired by Fuga: Melodies of Steel but with less party death, these children live and laugh together under the tutelage of a Beltrax Kagayaki, who introduces himself as a "human". However, these "humans" aren't known in the flying continents in which they live in, so what he could possibly mean by that is not quite known.
Even still, with the currently fulfilled promise of a happy life away from Schwein, who are they to judge him?
The superior leader Caninu, Heather was tasked by Schwein to be a pickpocket, and was the first to encounter Beltrax who admired her unique (albeit rough) stealth skills. Giving her healthy meals, a warm bed, and an "education" (whatever that means), she was motivated to encourage the others to join her. She's also studying to be a Thief, but not the kind that steals. Rather, a fleet-footed swordfighter who takes advantage of enemy weakpoints. She doesn't know much about her birth parents.
The cool and calm Felineko, Reed's music skills made him a street performer for a while, which made it easy for Heather to find him. Bothered by all the pain and pestilence around town, he wasn't sure how an education would help in their world, until Beltrax introduced to him the teachings of clerics from his hometown. He wasn't sure where did Beltrax get these texts, but he wasn't going to point fingers when the spells written included dispels and healing. His birth parents were a pair of traveling performers who had no defences against the bandit attacks during their stay at one village.
The hyper and curious Lagoden, Lily was supposed to sell flowers, but sometimes the flowers would crumble in different ways when she picked them from her basket. When taken in, Beltrax discovered that these were signs she was gifted at magic and simply needed a way to control it. The training is softer due to her age, and his focus is a comfortable learning environment, but someday she'll be one of the greatest spellcasters around. Her birth parents kept her in their storm cellar when they were "expecting visitors", and the next time the doors opened was to get her to the orphanage in the first place.
The jolly but cowardly Caninu, Elm had more strength in his stomach than in his heart, and this would get the children in trouble when he ate Schwein's food or the items he was supposed to be selling at the market. Conditioning himself into thinking that eating food is bad, it took Beltrax time to reconvince him that eating without permission is bad, and that he's giving him ALL the permission to eat what's set before him. He wants to work on his cowardice, so he requested Beltrax to teach him the ways of the warrior, who he read in storybooks were unafraid and powerful. His parents sent him to an orphanage while they worked to cover their overwhelming debts, and haven't been heard since.
The calculating and aloof Caninu, Alyssa's rich heritage forced her to become knowledgeable at such a young age, which Schwein took advantage of by having her take care of taxes and the like. Beltrax encouraged her that she can learn at her own pace now, to which she formally requested him to provide her with more challenging material as she had grown accustomed to math. One day, she came across texts meant for Reed and Lily, and thus she- with her brilliant intellect -understood both sides of magic. Mastery, however, would prove too taxing, and she settled with being that jack-of-all-trades. Her uncle forced her to run from home after he assassinated her parents in order to inherit the family business.
The aggressive yet passionate Urdaeus, Laurence was and always will be a fighter, like his parents before him. Knowing Schwein took them away from him, he constantly vowed revenge against the pig, and took to the streets to train and earn prize money. Understanding his pain and passion, Beltrax took special care in training him while also ensuring he retains his education. At first Laurence didn't know why Beltrax would care, until he heard those magic words that made him loyal forever.
