It’s 22th of December I’m home from collage for the Christmas holiday, the alarm clock shows 9:13.
‘Don’t have to get up, have the week of, no homework.’ And I drop my head back onto the pillow.
Eventually making my way downstairs to the living room, a lit Christmas tree stands slightly lopsided in the corner of the room and while thick snow is falling down outside by the dozens, already having turned the street white.
I make my breakfast and watch some television, the one show after another, after a while I get hungry again and eat a second breakfast and a third and I lose count, in fact I didn’t count at all.
After a while I fall asleep, wake up again and it all repeats again, until I snap out of it.
‘What happened, how long have I been doing this, why has no one else come down stairs yet?’
I look at the clock and it says 9:13, I grab my phone 9:13, the one clock after another all show roughly the same, what is worse is that the date is still 22th of December.
And then I looked outside, the snow is almost a meter high, it was only a few centimetres when I woke up this morning.
‘How is it still the same date and time, is this some sort of nightmare? It all feels real and nothing is out of the ordinary other than the snow and time, and my parents are still not awake!’
I run upstairs it’s still dark here with none of the curtains open and the sun still rising, I pull on the door but it doesn’t move a bit not even the door handle moves.
Nothing seems to make it move: bashing, kicking even using a large hammer, no dint not even a sound comes of it, and it’s the same with the walls to their room.
Not knowing what else to do I try to pass the “time” by doing some hobbies and fix stuff around the house.
After a while however I notice that the food is running out, and what is worse is that the snow has gotten up to 2 meters high.
Trying to walk over it isn’t doable since it’s too soft and I sink into it but going straight through it isn’t an option ether.
But I come up with another plan: digging.
I jury rig a pickaxe from a large chisel and a oak wooden table leg.
I may not be able to get through the snow, but I could dig my way to the neighbours, I don’t know if they would still have any food, but I don’t have much other choice.
The ground is frozen solid which is a blessing and a curse the ceiling doesn’t collapse but it’s cold as hell and very hard to dig through.
I’ve ran out of food in what feels like only a few days into the digging, my arms are sore and tired but I got to find more before I die out of hunger.
After that I lost all thought and started digging mindlessly collapsing on occasion from exhaustion and simply continue again after waking up.
Until I broke through the wall of the neighbours basement.
I crawl through the unfinished hole, pushing over a rack filled with tools, not taking the time to completely dig the exit out.
A noise comes out of the sudden from the basement door, the door handle moves a bit up and down before it is finally opened.
2 bare feet walk down the stairs, the skin is as white as that of a corpse, after a few awkward steps down the person falls down the stairs.
He seems to be the neighbour but he doesn’t seem mentally there, he is still wearing his pyjamas, his movement is slow and uncoordinated.
His body isn’t the same anymore, not just his skin is different, his eyes have sunken into his head and the pupils are completely dilated to the point that there is hardly any white visible, and he seems to have lost all fat and most muscle.
He starts crawling towards me using almost only his arms and groaning, reminding me of a zombie, I panic and swing my makeshift pickaxe and drive it straight through his skull.
‘what have I done, he was something like a zombie right? It must have been he looked mummified.’
The living room is dark, the lights are of and the windows are fully covered in snow, no longer letting any light through.
I turn on a light out of habit even though I can see relatively well despite having only the light from upstairs as light source.
The light blinds me I dim the lights so I can see again and quickly move to the kitchen.
The place is trashed, literally 2 bags of rubbish have been emptied out over the floor, he must have been looking for food scraps, I do too for a moment, desperately looking for anything edible but the only thing I find are a few corks, I think they’re edible at least anyway they’re gone now.
He had eaten sadly anything resembling food even the cat food and looking at the pool of blood in the corner of the room, the cat too.
However not everything edible: spices, herbs, coffee, thee and sugar.
Absolutely disgusting to even eat in combination and especially separate but I have the best seasoning a man can have on my side, starvation.
I mix it all and even have some left for a few days.
But this won’t cut it I have to get more and there clearly isn’t any proper food in here, the way I see it is there only one more option and is move on to the next house.
So I continue to dig further, I live of the gross mixture for a while until I run out, and attempt to find food again in the neighbour’s house in a desperate attempt to continue.
I try to open one of the bedrooms and the same thing happens like that of my parents, the door refuses to budge in anyway, seemingly indestructible.
I look into the sink mirror while searching through the bathroom and see to my shock not my own face.
My face mouth and nose have been pushed forward and formed together forming a sort of a short snout.
I look closer and see that on my nose (snout?), small hairs are growing and on the rest of my face too, it’s not dense but it’s still there.
And my hands too not just the thin layer of fur but my nails I had noticed it before but didn’t think much of it I thought it was the dirt but I’m trying to wash them clean and they stay grey and thick.
‘what is happening, is this the same that had happened to…, no this is different I think, I’m not going feral, right?’
I stare at myself in the mirror and now notice that my iris are enormous and my pupils very dilated, now I think about it I didn’t even turn on the light but I see everything perfectly clear.
‘Am I adapting?’
I make my way to the attic after a short panic attack.
A faint green glow is coming from the windows, they’re are placed diagonally into the roof ending up covered in a layer of snow.
The warmth of the house has caused some snow to melt through the window frame and large faintly glowing green mushrooms grow from it.
I smell them and they seem edible and in a large abundance.
After cooking up and eating the green mushrooms I start to get a strong strange feeling in my stomach, the same feeling I have had over my entire body but much much weaker ever since I woke up…today.
After a long but a bit more easy digging I finally emerge on the other side.
The haze goes away and I can think again the basement is dark but in a shock I see in front of me a long snout with long whiskers and now I think about it I have used the whiskers to know where the tunnel walls were.
I rush upstairs to find a large mirror.
And see to my horror that my body has drastically changed since the last time.
It’s now fully covered in black, grey and white fur to protect me from the cold.
My hands have become bigger and the fingers longer ending in thick sharp nails making it easier to grab the rocks and pull the partially loose ones free.
My iris of my eyes are now so large that I can’t see the white anymore and the pupils have turned into slits, this all have made it extremely easy to see in the dark.
The ears have moved up slightly and become long and sensitive, I can now hear the slightest thing happening around me.
And I’ve grown a long tail almost reaching the ground for what am I not completely sure.
The owner of the house is luckily for me not home and has left a large storage of food behind but what I’m more happy about is the abundance of the green mushrooms are growing through the window frames, which I have become quite fond of.
Even though I could sit here for a while, it could take what would feel like months before I run out again but I won’t sit and idle.
Not only has the digging become a fun thing for me to do but no one is coming the snow won’t stop so I can’t ether.
I’m still bipedal but my spine became eventually horizontal with a long thick and heavy tail dragging behind me as a counterweight.
And my feet became bigger to hold the balance and my toes turned into clawed to walk over the uneven ground even growing a 6th one on the back of the heel.
I still dig through the ground to this day from house to house in the hope that I will find another like me, I’ve found others but they all were the same, starved to the point of insanity.
But there got to be more people like me out there, still sane, still thinking.

after seeing the part you mention about the bright green mushrooms growing near the window, I couldn't help but think of Mestro 2033 haha.
The setting is a nuclear post-apocalyptic "world", where the surface was completely devastated and contaminated by radiation (including a nuclear winter), what remains of humanity was left living in the sub-tarran subway tunnel network ... but the things are not so sible, both on the surface and in the underground tunnel network, you can find mutant "beasts", supernatural horrors, abandoned tunnels and above all, the enmities and wars between humans for resources.
I'm not saying it's the "same" thing, but it's a subject that I quite like. Outside of that, I liked the progressive transformation of the protagonist a lot and the setting also helped me like it, I can't deny it XD.

Another good connoisseur, I couldn't read any of the three "Metro" books but I could get hold of the games.
Whether influencing or not, the "underground winter" setting worked out for you. The mushroom theme seemed to be the "nuclear winter" type and, above all, I remembered the fluent mushrooms from "Metro 2033".
If it was a "nuclear winter", I liked that "subtle" clue. Whether the theme of "Metro" influenced you or not, don't worry.
