Well, the point of a study is to use reference. Practice with the reference, then when you get good and start understanding what you're doing, then try one without. But also... the thing to remember about references: you don't have to copy it for it to be a useful reference. There was a good article about this awhile ago. If I find it again, I'll post it for you. ^^
