Whenever you go out on a hike in Hawai'i, or go fishing, especially in a remote area? Or go anywhere near a sacred area, you want to make an offering. I would make an offering of water from my bottle, pouring some to the four directions. And when you come out safely, you make a thank you offering.
One time I forgot this.
I was on top of Haleakala, taking pictures as I walked along the road. I kept having all kind of trouble with my camera, the film, the gear? I was using the light meter to take a reading, and the needle went all the way to the left. I adjusted for the light, and it shot all the way over to the right.
"Huh? That's odd..."
I adjusted again, and it shot all the way to the left again.
"Wait, what???" I was trying to take a picture of a shrine, and my gear was going cuckoo! I looked around, then suddenly remembered I'd forgotten the offering. "Oh! Oh, sorry!" I made the offering, then tried again.
The needle settled right in the middle where I expected it to.
Since then, I never failed to make an offering before going anyplace remote in Hawai'i.
