Being in your early teens is tough.
Suddenly, everything about you is changing.
Being cool becomes your primary goal.
"Ohmygwad, I can't wear that! What if Brian (or Stacey) sees me?"
Trust me, I know.
I remember what it was like to be 13 years old.
Yes, we did have indoor plumbing back then...
Soon, however, you mature and realize that being cool
is less important than having cool stuff.
Then you have to go to work and try to pay for your cool stuff.
That leaves very little time to worry about being cool.
Then you buy a fursuit and abandon all hopes of being cool.
Ever.
I stumbled across this clan of uber-cool teens as I was making
my rounds on the pier. If you ever want to know what it's like to
be invisible, try to interact with a group of 14 year olds while you
are in fursuit.
I leaned over the rail and watched a surfer catch a terrific left, riding
one of Huntington Beach's mushiest breaks like he meant it,
but getting shut out early.
I whistled quietly and said "Goofy footed surfers don't stand a chance
here. It'd be like me trying to win first place in a cat show."
An uncomfortable silence ensued. A gull flew overhead and let go of a
bomb, narrowly missing my left ear.
"Any of you guys surf?" I asked.
The kid in the middle said something muffled to his buds and they
all laughed. I decided to laugh, too.
That freaked them out.
A few more waves rolled in and a few more minutes ticked by.
I knew these kids were wishing I would retreat, before their force field
of cool was shattered for good.
Finaly, the kid on my left spoke up.
"Whatcha' supposed to be, Snoopy or sumthin'?"
His cohorts giggled.
"Nope," I said. "I'm just a random mutt."
The kid looked at me with a raised eyebrow.
"Well then, Mr. Random Dog, why don't you go find a random
fire hydrant to pee on."
His friends began to laugh but I beat them to it.
What a great line. Maybe I should hire him to write for me.
I think he was offended that I was amused.
"Shoot, you ain't a real dog anyway," He said. "Real dogs ain't allowed
on the pier. Can't you read the signs?"
I assured him that I knew the mayor and that we were cool.
He looked me in the plastic eyes and shook his head.
"My friend," I chuckled, "I'm going to put you in my journal.
You are awesome"
His friends turned and left.
If I thought he was awesome, then clearly he couldn't be.
He frowned as his compadres left him alone with the gabby canine.
"Shoot, you probably can't even write. Real dogs don't have no journals."
Then he froze as he realized his mistake. He knew I had him.
"So, you're saying that I'm real now?" I asked innocently.
"No..." He fumbled for words.
"I meant that a dog like you can't hold a pen to write."
I smiled. "OK, I admit it, I can't hold a pen. I am a real dog."
Checkmate.
Game over, his coolness barrier now a memory, he
gave me a winning smile.
"I guess you could be real," he said. "You're as stubborn as my dog."
I'd pay money to see kids smile like that more often.
As I left him alone to rebuild his aura, I was grateful to be let into
his teenage fortress of cool, even if just for a moment.
I continued on, giving happy paws to the humans and keeping
an eye out for gulls.
...And watching for another cool group to infiltrate.

Oh, I never bothered with "cool" during my teen years. I was fat, spent my lunchtimes browsing the Internet in the library and carried books like Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy in my blazer pocket. Not for me the tawdry fifteen minutes of cool.
For what it's worth though, Dogbomb, to me you'll always out-cool a Tritonian space-penguin, with an ice-cream.

Lol, nice one Dogbomb! I know when I was younger, I wouldnt be caught dead next to anyone in a costume! I was taught to be afraid of strangers, and that fear of strangers, got me to fear the unknown. I was never a "cool" kid, always "that guy" that no one talked to, my life was to try and be cool, only to get talked down on >_>... I dont know where I was going, but your stories make me smile, I have changed since then, and since AC2010, I now love people in costumes!
Keep up your work, you are bringing the world of Furries into the light of the public! Now, my brain needs to recollect itself, since its all over the place >_>...

So many of my friends would fall under the category of... cool kids. Or at least kids who consider themselves cooler than most. I have still yet to introduce them to my fursuit, although I really am excited to do so just to gauge the reaction. As long as I don't talk... how are they to know who it is? Even if they did! I'm a senior this year, I have nothing to lose!
I invite you to infiltrate my cool group any time, Dogbomb.

Heh, I was never learned the Skill of "Cool". My forcefield was more like an inversion field. :>
The only cool I received was from other cool people thinking I was cool because I was so short I was cool... But that kinda cool is very short lived. Glad to see that teen let his barrier down and see that, even for a little bit, a tall dog can be cool. Even if he had to admit that with out the presence of his friends. :P

Ahhh, thank you for yet another wonderful story!
It reminds me of the teenage days of yore (I'm only 20, so it's still a pretty fresh memory XD). It really was my number 1 priority to be the cool kid and look cool while trying to not look like I was trying to look cool. XD Things were pretty complicated back then. Then I found furry and now I prance around with a horse tail on. The days of being a nerd have finally arrived. <3

Being cool doesn't always meaning the best or the brightest.... Being cool is also thinking outside of the box the people around you are stuck in!
I would say you got him to think outside his box and to see the world with a different set of eyes if only for a short while...
Good Show there my friend and keep up the to good work.

I think it has something to do with having many many miles under my paw and having seen the world from two different viewpoints myself.
I never thought of myself as cool but one of my nieces wanted to know what I thought of what she was going to wear to a dance.... So I told her and I suggested something else that covered more skin BUT hinted and flirted more... I told her why and she liked it... After the dance she told me it was so cool to not be dressed like everyone else there. And she had a lot of fun. She was asked to dance by a number of the guys and by one of the gals.... She said the accepted the offer to dance with all of them...

I never bothered trying to be cool and social in my younger teen years [aka a few years ago xD]... I was just that dog obsessed girl that always drew dogs and read dog books and convinced people that feeding your dog table scraps is NOT healthy.
But I'd hang out with you any day! And I'd make my peers come with me, too. Nothing's cooler than hanging out with a giant talking dog, right?

While I was reading I was thinking "OH HO HO, the dogbomb thinks he's cool and his friends run away." Why dose he stay instead of following them?

We need more youngsters like this >_>

Oh that is hilarious! I love it when people try to act too cool to talk to you. Or better is when you KNOW they don't want to take a pic with you, but all their friends are egging them on. It's so funny to see how awkward they'll be...and YOU'RE the one in the dog costume!
Though for some reason, I notice it's usually the guys that are too cool to talk to me. Girls, especially ones around my age (early-to-mid 20's) usually find the suit just adorable. That went doubly so when my friend who is 4' 6" wore her around. The other suiters didn't stand a chance!
"Then you buy a fursuit and abandon all hopes of being cool." You're right, those things are hot to wear, especially in the summer! lol. (I never was a cool kid anyways...I just did my own thing, like it or lump it!)

im almost 17 and my whole life ive watched my friends and classmates just dress to keep up with the world. i just looked at them and smiled because i knew they wernt being themselves. the word "cool" to me means this: be yourself and dress the way you want to act the way you want to with restraint of course at times and just ignore people that call you names or try to bully you. im my own weird self i love being me and nobody else. if more people just stayed true to themselves and didnt try to put others down i believe that the world would be even better
Someday, I'll have a fursuit, and someday I'll be able to do just what you do but right now I cannot afford even a partial and I once was wasnt too alright with that but realized, I'd rather have a nice computer that works instead of this peice of junk. You do amazing things in suit, and I wish I could share in it with you IRL, but alas I cant. So I guess watching from here is the closest I'll get. And I'm alright with that.
Sometimes God humbles you. And he humbled me when I wanted a fursuit, with finding out that my mom - will pay me money - alot of money if I stay sober the entire year I'm 21. And I decided that I'm going to use that money to buy a computer, and work on getting my photography business going.
Your stories always lighten my heart. And I love to read them :) Dogbomb you're awesome.

When I was in middle school I tried to be "cool", but I was wayyyy too nerdy for that to ever work. Once I got to high school, I started running around in cat ears and any chance I had at being cool was gone forever. But it's more fun being yourself, so i don't mind. :]
I'd much rather hang out with a talking dog than the cool crowd, anyway.

Pfff you just don't understand my generation. we teens are the tricking bomb man wat you talkin about xP. I know everything there is to know about everything man, plus I'm freaking invincible, you ain't got nothin on me yo. I'm the best there is! <--- average teenagers thought process lol XDD
Hey, at least it's something everyone goes through so we can all relate.
Being a teen is tough.
Then you start to get old and realize how much stuff you don't know and
how uncool you really are.
Then you get a fursuit and the fun begins again....
Thanks for reading and commenting!

I think we have a different definition of "cool" than those teens. And I like ours a lot more! :)
Now, as far as "real and genuine" fursuiters go, I would like to nominate a certain Dogbomb for the number one award. ;) He's all heart, plus a fine nose for sniffing out great stories!

What a great interaction Dogbomb - you're probably the only suiter alive who could have won that battle! Kudos for playing along, even if I did talk in suit I probably would have folded after the "hydrant" line. You're a real class act that we all can learn from, for sure. The 13-16 or so age range, especially boys, are really interesting to interact with because most of them would rather be caught dead than be seen with a fursuiter in front of their friends!
Great story! I'd probably never be totally comfortable with wearing a fursuit in walking around in public like that but even as a kid, I've really wanted to perform in a rock band that performs in fursuit and I'd have no problem doing it... but neither having a fursuit nor know any many serious furry musicians, that's a bit of a distant dream. :)
X3 I'm in my teens and 'cool' has seemed to pass me by. I have around two real friends in school, so I never worry about what anyone else thinks. X3 I did wear a dog ears and tail set to school for the last day of school last year. XD Everyone seemed to love it. I'm glad this kid got to escape from 'cool' for a bit.
When I heard someone was through being cool it imediately made me think of this:

God, I'm old
*hugs* I think you're cool. In fact, I envy your outings. I enjoy reading about them.

I get out there and re-arrange a lot..
That's quite the understatement! XD
Seems you're ALWAYS up in some place, whether it's the pier or a bar or a restaurant! How do you do it though? How do you walk up to a complete stranger (while dressed in fursuit) and start a conversation? ^_^;;

Wow, that's pretty amazing, actually. I always like to break the social norms, but I'm not exactly a butterfly. I get all sorts of looks going out in public wearing my utilikilt.. I can't imagine how many looks I'd get wearing a fursuit! I'd positively DIE! Unfortunately, people get a lot of negative preconceptions about furries that usually don't have a shred of truth to them. My furry friends and I are really nice guys.. and very nerdy. We all have our reasons for being a part of the fandom. Myself, I'm pretty complex, and I feel like my fursona helps me get perspective on who I am. I wouldn't be one to wear a fursuit because I don't feel like I physically am my fursona, but rather more spiritually and mentally.
Reading this made me really happy, though. It's nice to know that there are more furries who aren't afraid to go out of the furry clique and be themselves around others. People kind of stereotype furries unfairly if they're well-versed in the Intertubes, and it's really cool to have a furry ambassador out there. :)

Having been raised by two dorks, had dorky friends, and dorky role models, there was only one time when I tried to put up a forcefield of cool and it shattered within two minutes of me meeting my future best friends. So now I live under the assumption that being a dork is totally awesome and my "cool" little brother is not entirely comfortable to be around me when I say anything even remotely dorky. :P
CHECKMATE, indeed. That's a really inspiring story, and I'm impressed by how you handled the situation. I think I would have caved. I don't care how young or old you are, making yourself look better by putting others down is pathetic. You are to be commended for your patience and bravery. I hated "cool" kids as a teenager and I resolved to never try to be one. And I don't regret it.
Haha! It's fun how ignorant those kids were before one of them started talking,
and that you actually did wrote a journal about this happening xD
I belive you give, not only me, but others alot of inspiration aswell.
And I think it's really nice of you to read and answer every comment,
plus your stories are really interesting aswell, keep doing what you're doing!
