Yey for Living in a Northwest Basement XD Giant Hobospiders!
I found this guy skittering across my floor and caught him. My boy friend is deathly afraid of spiders and though I have been trying to ween him of this fear I don't think I would have been able to pry him off the ceiling for a week had he seen this thing.
I believe that this is a common Hobospider. They are similar to wolf spiders in appearance. They get rather large and are well known as intimidating spider.
Contrary to popular belief, they are not toxic and not aggressive. There has never been a documented bite with the necrotic reaction that some people believe these have. I have been co-existing with these things for more almost 2 years now and have yet to even see one strike a defensive posture with the exception of this one who was quite upset that I put him in a bowl and shook it when he tied crawling out.
I was tempted to keep him as a pet but I think I would have been sleeping on the couch :(
Now for those of you who may not have known, I am actually a recovered arachniphobe. I actually got over my fear by forcing myself to catch Wolfspiders when I was a young teen.

lol, In Australia peoples fears of spiders and snakes are well founded though. They are home to the most dealdy snake in the world and at least 1 dangerous spider. In the U.S. we only need to worry about black widows and brown recluses, which cause horrible bits but are really only deadly to very small children and people to stupid to go to the doctor at the first sign of irritation after a bite.
Brown recluses are small little reclusive spiders that have a bite that causes necrotic skin rot that has to be surgically removed. They are pretty nasty in that you don't normally notice when the actual bite happens. Thankfully they live up to their name and mostly don't interact anywhere near areas where there are people.
lol, Like I said. those bites are pretty rare. unless you plan on rummaging though boxes of knickknacks in peoples attics while your here you're probably fine. black widows are the more common bite but thats because they don't give a shit where they live. The always loved making their webs in my bookshelves, TV stands, and even couches when I lived in the desert. Their bites can make a leg or and arm go numb and make you pretty wickedly sick but they are generally not fatal.
I'm 42 and still trying to get over mild arachnophobia. Comes from putting on a boot at age 6 and finding a freshly crushed black widow in it after feeling the crush. I even played with black widows with my friends in 5th and 6th grade, but I still go wiggy at the sight of a huge wolf spider in my shower, and sadly, they don't have room in my home. I don't have flying insects, so they can just go crushy bye bye. But, I do have something of a pet spider on my front porch. She's earning her keep as she's catching wasps. So, I'm getting better.
Have fun.
Maybe you can do your own little experiment and let a Hobo bite you.
BTW, I'm up here in Hoboland too, near Spokane actually (Hobos are the least of my worries, we have Tea Partiers here.)

lol, yeah good luck with that. You should atend one of their events and take a bunch of these with you: http://media.photobucket.com/image/.....lemonparty.png :P
Yeah my arachnophobia was triggered by waking up in bed with a big honken wolf spider when I was young. It's tough thing to get over. Black widows still creep my the hell out but I have gotten over being shocked at the sight of spiders I know to be harmless. I don't think that without poking one of this hobos with a stick repeatedly that i could get on pissed enough to eve attempt biting me. They seem to be pretty chill though I don't suppose that it would be that bad if they did since the most they could do is give you a mildly itchy welt.
I haven't actually seen any black widows up here but I suspect that there are probably plenty of them out on that side of the mountains. People tell me that you can find them here on this side but so far I have found a few spiders that look like them minus being the same stark black and minus the hour glass. for that matter the head and thorax shape in these guys don;t match black widows so I suspect that it is just one of many misleading spider folk tales.

Cool! We have banana spiders around here ( http://davidmichaelkennedy.com/blog.....ana-spider.jpg (not my photo)). They don't tend to come indoors, but like to build their enormous webs across paths in forests, which cause them to hover right around face-height.
wholy shit! I suppose one could get used to those but man. That's a big assed spider!
The worst web makers I have ever seen here are some of the lager orb weavers that only get about 1 1/2 inches in leg span. So do those spiders actually take their name for being around bananas?

I think they get their name because they're big and yellow, like a banana, but I'm not sure. I used to encounter these all the time when I was working as a field archaeologist in southeastern Georgia, and even though I'm not afraid of spiders, having them appear an inch from your face while pushing through dense underbrush is a bit unsettling.
Spiders are cool, but I still shudder whenever a big, black, hairy Tegenaria atrica (a close relative of your Hobo) runs for my legs when I'm on the loo or drops onto my keyboard when I'm at the computer. This happens far too often... :/
Their size never ceases to amaze me, no matter how many of them I see. They're our second largest spider; only the semi-aquatic Great raft spider has them beat.
