Excerpt from the blog of Arsene Manchineel: Lab Assistant.
I was requested by my coworker to draw the favorite of their new clutch of Toxel, who has reached the ripe old age of 4 months, and is now eligible to be battled.
Despite their infant-like behavior, cutesy proportions and inability to breed - “Baby” Pokemon like Toxel are no more babies than other first stage Pokemon. A true Toxel neonate is the size of a human hand, with external gills and a complete lack of access to the Poison or Electric type energies that the more mature Toxel is known for.
Though considered a good Pokemon for a less experienced Poison or Electric enthusiast (owing to its very mild toxin), it is not recommended for brand-new trainers or trainers with little patience. Toxel are known for throwing legendary tantrums, squealing at deafening volumes and slapping their chests until they’ve tired themselves out or their trainer recalls them.
This behavior is considered by some to be extremely endearing, and even the Galarians of centuries ago adored their babyish demeanour… unfortunately, to the Pokemon’s detriment.

The “proper” Toxel breed standard of old morphed over time to grossly exaggerate certain attributes considered “cute”, without regard for the Pokemon’s health. The once popular Old Royal Galarian Toxel- a symbol of Galarian nobility- were prone to airway obstruction, severe micrognathia, bacterial imbalances, chronic sinus inflammation, brain swelling, seizures, ocular prolapse, and death resulting from all of the above.
On the left is a modern Toxel, still possessing the signature “baby face” without the extremely heavy brow ridge and flattened rostrum of the Old Royal Galarian variety on the right. Thankfully the ORG as a breed is extinct; its propagation was officially banned a century ago.
There have been some attempts by fringe breeding collectives to revive the ORG breed standard, citing its existence as “a cornerstone of [Galar’s] heritage and culture.” and more bizarrely “The triumph of Man over Mon made flesh.”
Those groups were very quickly stripped of their breeding certifications and flamed into oblivion by everybody with two brain cells to rub together.
