Because you know, sometimes i's best to ditch the shield and go full-on barbarian mode. A two-handed battleaxe is a good, heavy weapon with a great chunk of power behind it, making it an ideal choice against other heavily-armoured foes. The downside is lack of defensive options. It's all too eay to catch yourself off-balance with it, and much harder to parry with than a sword or one-handed weapon. Maybe I should go more heavily armoured when I fight with the axe.

Well, the sword is more reliable, so it trends towards the average. The axe is just as likely to deal a glancing 1 as a crushing 12.
And yeah, there's something primally terrifying about a warrior rushing you with such a huge weapon raised. Doesn't much work with my more defensive fighting style, but sometimes you just gotta get aggro.
