Thanks! I've been milling through pictures all over and such to try to figure out how best to make one myself, and I managed to produce a method very similar to yours. I will have to post pictures once I get a tail made, but I am jealous you have a Hobby Lobby near you. The nearest one for me is nearly 3 hours with traffic, and I'm moving in a few days, where the nearest one is many hours away. I have gotten the Simplysoft and vanna's from other craft stores for knitting projects, and will have to experiment with various acrylics to find the one that suits me best. the Simply Soft I had stashed is such a glossy end result but will require much more straightening, methinks.
If I can find the time and patience, I am definitely going to make a tail like this... I'm a college student so I'm broke and found out I was furry only about two years ago so haven't been able to explore much with fursuits, but this will be an awesome and affordable way to start:) Thank you so very much:)
I'll try this when I get some money to buy yarn and stuff with. Thankfully I've seen 'I love this yarn" and stuff like that at my walmart, so it'll be easy :D
Only problem I"ll likely have is that i dunno how to braid. <_< But i'll just get my mom to do that for me. :D

You can get them for like, $5 at a dollar store. The cheap ones actually work really, really well. Mine personally was a $15 Walmart-buy, and I LOVE it. There's no need to spend a ton of money. XD
As for what kind you get.. Make sure it's a FLAT iron. Sometimes it will say "flat iron" but have a curved iron. Don't get that. You want straight as can be. XP (Though someday I'm going to curl my tail. Bwuahhahha.)

lol I know the difference in them, and I'm in sweden (learning swedish, everything is in swedish, ahhhhh x.x) but I was looking at them nonetheless online, seems the discount places has small travel ones for 99 sek, which is roughly.......14 according to my currency converter in my phone, gonna actually scrounge around and see if I can find one for freeeeee.
ah here http://www.clasohlson.se/Product/Pr.....x?id=152539526
Even tho I have never put one to my curly curly hair, I am a girl and know what its used for XD I just don't wish to touch my hair with heat, doing my best to avoid damage afterall XD

This would be my first time trying to make a tail, and someone else on FA suggested I use this method. I'm going to try and adapt it to make a black bunny tail or something... I don't know yet, but I'll keep you posted once plans are made if you're interested!
One question though, why shouldn't I use cotton yarn?
One question though, why shouldn't I use cotton yarn?
Because you won't end up with fur : P You'll end up with a little stub of nose-hair-like hairs. xD
And for a bunny tail, just make a shorter braid of more strands. Where it says to loop about 60(or 40, I don't remember what I put) times for the braid part, just loop about 100, but not so long. Then only make a braid that is about 4 inches in length! ^^ You should be able to get a tail like that done in one day. : 3

Ah... I see... Sort of...
If the braid were four inches in length, wouldn't that make the bunny tail like, seven inches long? That would be way too big... I would probably only need a 1-2in braid, because I don't want a huge puff-ball, just a cotton-tail! I only want to make a bunny tail because IDK what else I would make... I could probably make a fox tail for my sister, but I don't have many yarn-tail appropriate animals that I want to dress up as...
Plus I read the one comment where you were talking about how the tail would mat... That makes me nervous because I would plan on wearing this to like school and other places...

Ok I'll comment so I can fav this to find it later =P
I've been looking for a way to make a nice looking yarn tail for awhile but your method seems to be the best for very real looking yarn tails! Thanks for the info on it!
*digs up some scrap yarn to experiment with using this technique*

Well, I usually buy in bulk because I have to. I buy key rings which are usually about a buck for around four or five of them, so that will last me for our five tails. And I have crap yarn that I buy for super cheap from thrift stores to use for bases, so that gets me a skein for around $2, and crap yarn at a store is around $3. Then the good yarn I usually have to buy between one and three skeins of, which costs me between $3 and $15 depending on the length of the tail. So costs altogether tend to be around $20 for each tail, most of the time only around $10, or even less because I almost never use the entire skein of yarn every time, so I ALWAYS have leftover yarn, so sometimes I can just use leftovers then the stuff is basically free. xD
Yeah, I'm cheap. XP

Right on doll! I would love to make a Hey tail :O I am tempted to go get stuff to do so, but I don't want to buy too much or not enough >.< nor do I want to end up wasting money on failing xD I'm very interested in this, so sorry if I end up asking a lot of questions :c I love how silky yours look, I have seen some people use your method and they don't look like they took time to straighten them xP I'm excited to try..OH Have you ever tried Mane and Tail detangler spray on the yarn? do you think it'd help keep the mats from building up..or make it worse? Hmmmmm xP
Whee! Thanks for this tutorial. Thanks to this I'm almost finished my first yarn tail!

This makes your brushing arm hurt after a few hours and the tuft look REALLY weird when you use easter color schemed variegated yarn as a practice. but I have a few questions:
- what is the pattern for making the five strand braid, cause being 6'1" I think I need to use the larger braid.
- for sewing the tufts onto the base, is it better to use a straight needle or a curved one, and how long of a needle?

I use a regular needle.
And no matter what kind of yarn you use, your arm will ache. But you'll get used to it. I can now brush for several days before I feel an ache.
The five strand braid is not a pattern, it's just something I learned how to do by working in a braiding shop. You can use more strands in your base to achieve a larger base, but I have no way to show you how to braid a five strand.

okay, I'll see if I know some who can show me how to do the five strand, but I think I'm going to lock me practice in a three layer save after I'm done, cause bright pink, cloud grey, robin egg blue, lime green, and magenta are colors that fur should never be, and I don't think I could wear it to even FWA (too embarassing!!).
Oh Thank YOU! Its a really good tutorial. I'm a knitter and I saw another tutorial but with crochet, which I know little to nothing about. >_< I am so happy you posted this, plus I am thinking about asking for a commission, my tiger fursona has a fluffy tail skunk like tail.
You are a lovely person to share your technique so freely like this <33
I'm gonna try to make a snow leopard tail and if that turns out alright then my friend is gonna get a tiger tail <33
Quick question though, do you think it'll make it easier to place the spots if I draw with a sharpy marker where I want the markings?

Thanks so much for the tutorial! Other methods I found look too time consuming and require stuffing, I'd rather not spend money where I can. I'll be sure to work on this soon:) Looks fun!
But I do have a question, I feel kind of dumb for asking but..how/where do you sew your fur bundles to the knot at the end? I'm just having a hard time wrapping my head around that, and I'm worried about leaving a stubby tip or something.

It is a little challenging sewing fluffs to the very end, but you can also avoid that by making your base the color of the tip of the tail, then just cut the extra at about 5 inches and brush/straighten that. : 3
Otherwise, sometimes I sew like 5 bundles together to make the end, and sew them on as a group after.

I've seen your tails around for a while and was wondering who made them and how. D8 Now I see this and MAN-- Gotta say. THANK you for sharing your technique(even if you've heard it a ton of times before) but I really think it's a great thing. It's a really innovative thing, and it's so simple! Anyone with even the smallest bit of sewing experience can make such a beautiful tail like this now! A lot of artists I see(tail/fursuit/digital and more) with really individual techniques never share or WANT to share because they feel like it would just spoil the business they get or something. So I will reiterate, thank you~ I'm sure this has brought a lot of smiles to people's faces~
Hmm, what an interesting, yet very effective tail! I've used yarn in the past and just unwound it until it could get any smaller, but this makes it look so much more realistic. I will certainly be using this technique on some of my plushies! It'll save me so much money in the end, and the results look nearly the same as faux fur. Thanks so much for sharing this. :D
Is it better to use a brush without the little heads? Like the one you have in the picture? Cause mine has ends like this one http://www.easybizchina.com/picture.....3b47c406f7.jpg and quite frankly im not sure that much yarn is supposed to be ending up in the brush instead >.>
(i'm attempting to make one using a combination of techniques but i did take your recommendation on yarn. :) ty )

imma try to make a tail.. thou i have to get the brushes first. I had a cat tail made for me out of fur and i love it but i wanna try to make one myself and this seems like it'd be easier for me. I fail when it comes to large amounts of sewing. >.< i'll post pictures when i get to working on it. :)
Oh, thank you so much for the tutorial!!! Your tails are absolutly amazing, and I would buy one from you, but you have quite a long list at the moment. I'm very excited to start this project, and thanks again for sharing your valued secrets. It means a lot to those who can't figure it out for themselves. :3
Thank you so much for posting this!
I just went out and got a couple brushes and a pound of caron yarn.
The only thing left to do now if find something on tv, lol!
Just one question: When attaching the braid to a ring, is there a certain kind you prefer?
I was going to use just an old keyring used for keychains.
Would it be better to braid a ring or purchase a bigger metal one?
