OMG... *cough*... zBrush 4 is a complete clusterfuck!
A trillion new settings and it crashes every single second, couldn't use the new features because they are the main source of evil. What's even worse is that you need to press 10 different hotkeys at once just to do a simple task.
I was about to add a lot more details and stuff, but zBrush hates me :(
After a few hours i gave up and tried the new render engine... well, it's really nice, but setting up SSS is almost impossible ( the manual doesn't really help )
Considering that i haven't spend that much time with V.4 the amount of bugs is just ridiculous ( especially Spotlight ) ... i hope a Service Pack is on the way.

Just curious, have you tried building the basic mesh in Maya/Max/Lightwave and import it just to create the displacement maps? I'm doing that now with v3, and it seems less limiting than doing it all in one program. Sadly, I have yet to see a 3D modeler/animator that does it all.
I do most of my stuff in zBrush, including base meshes. After that i usually send everything to C4D for the final render ( texture, displacement map etc. )
Creating a base mesh in any of the major 3D programs is the most common/precise way and most likely the best, but it's also time consuming.
Just a matter of personal preferences.

Aye. Time-consuming, I hear ya. I thought about trying to model in zBrush first, but I cringe at what zBrush might do with the contours, and how Lightwave will scream at me for using anything other than quads... until LW 10 that is. Feels like I just bought LW 9.6 just yesterday :(
The things you griped about were things I didn't notice at first and I was like "wut he complanin 'bout?" Now I'm like "oh." :\ Spotlight crashes Zbrush unpredictably, that's the most annoying thing. Also, for some reason, the lights don't affect the model I'm working on unless I fill the model with a fastshader. Wtf is up with that?
DOH! *loudest headdesk in the history of headdesking* XC Consarnit. Hours of work, down the tubes. Well, thanks. :3 Now I know.
I really hope they come out with a service pack that addresses the Spotlight crashing business because I <3 using it and it's annoying as frick to have my workflow interrupted by repeated crashes. XC I've noticed (and this could be coincidence) it tends to crash if I hit shift+z while the Spotlight dial is up. Hitting z to get rid of the dial then shift+z to get rid of the Spotlight image seems to lower the instances of crashing. Again, could be coincidence but there you have it.

They still haven't fixed the damn Unified Skin scale issues. I still have to export and import the mesh back in just for the transpose tools to work correctly. Seriously, it seems like they just add stuff on without fixing a lot of the older stuff.
That said, the clip brushes and shadowbox are SWEEEEET.
