What I say here may not be 100% true, but it works for me. If you intend to get good, you should use what I say as a jumping off point for your own research.

EDIT- Proportions are GUIDELINES, not absolute equations. Some people have a longer torso and shorter legs, some have shorter hips. Such guidelines are there to assist you, not tell you what to do.
Sometimes you may need to rely more on your own intuition than proportion guidelines. You may not know how to draw people, but you've definitely seen people before. Your eye should be able to tell what looks right and what looks off; trust that instinct.

It really does and I still not completely sure why! I figure it's got to be the width of the character because 7 head style doesn't guide the width as much, but when they're side by side the shoulders look a little higher, too. That's the main reason why I like to combine them.
