Making an orchestral piece of music in a computer program can be a pain. There are a lot of instruments to pull up, organise, and mix. So, over the last couple of weeks, I've been poking in and out of making an orchestral template for Reason, so when I want to make such a tune, instead of cocking about with instruments for ages, I can just load this thing up and get straight down to composing.
Anyway, I made this tune last night (and polished a little today) to try it out. The workflow is a hundred times easier, it really lets me take off my engineer hat in favour of the composer hat.
The composition itself is rather simple, yes, but I like it anyway and surprised myself with how quickly I managed to throw a track together for once.
If there's anyone out there who uses Reason 4 (or, in the very near future, 5!) and would like a copy of the template, drop me a PM and I'll throw it your way. :3 Don't worry about ReFill compatibility, it consists entirely of Orkester samplers (though I did use Reason Pianos in this track).

this is a great idea! if you want to have on-the-fly access just make yourself a lot of templates. for like brass quartets, symphonics, wind parts, etc etc. that's an awesome way to save like hours of dicking around
i'd ask for the template but i'm an FL Studio/Ableton Live kinda fella

I actually got the idea from Aaron Marks' Complete Guide to Game Audio, a guide to working as a composer and sound designer in the games industry. He recommends, when landing a contract, scouring your sound libraries for suitable sounds, then making and using such a template as this for the game in question. That way, each cue will be easier to compose, the game's score will sound consistent, and will have its own particular sonic character, as will each subsequent project you use this technique for.
Yep, only made one tune in 6 so far. The interface is a bit of a leap, as it uses Record's, which is taking some getting used to. Things link to the main mixer... without wires!!! It's crazy.
And yay, the Orkester sound bank is amazing. I'll have to give your stuff a look - and the other musicians I've had comments from these last couple of days - when my Internet gets out of its current state of absolute crawlage. Anything more than text and images is just not downloading tonight.
