Liz recalls what she knows of her predecessors, and we see that it sadly isn't much. A good example of the importance of family among dragons...no matter how much they can push your buttons. x3

Another fact: the plague that's been referenced a couple of times actually is what started the war between Erradas and Auran, in which both Darcteis and Bairus fought. Auran attacked the larger continent with a type of bio-warfare that a small group of Dark magic users conjured...a virus that was nearly impossible to detect until it was too late and resisted conventional medicine. It was eventually contained by the Magic Healers, but by the time it was, many of the elderly dragons had succumbed to it, and even many of the younger ones...among the victims were Lita's husband and Darcteis's father. Bairus (Ramin's father, remember) was nearly caught by it, but thanks to his Healer wife, survived.

It was contained in mostly one big area though, about quarter the size of Erradas, so it was easily escapable and many simply moved quickly out of the zone while they could. One of the last ones to be taken was Sheila, Liz's mother.

The Dark mages were eventually caught and persecuted for methods of cowardice in war by their own continent, and the fight ended in a rather uneasy truce. But the peace allowed a bit of a boom in an advanced appreciation of culture and a rise in technology, right in the middle of which, this storyline takes place.
