Once again, I'm doing a cover with vocals that are barely out of my comfort zone. I'm getting better at singing the higher ranges without straining my voice but once I throw that guitar over my shoulder it's a different ball game. So if you're expecting me to sound as clean as James LaBrie, that's not going to happen. My natural singing voice is grittier but not to the point of screaming.
This is all done in one take. Kevin Moore (Keyboard Hero) gets the credits to this classic DT song.

Bass - Peavey Millenium BXP5

heck yes dude!
That's one rare thing. A Dream Theater cover!! hah. I listen to them "too" much. I'm really really impressed. Rest assured, I have every note of their songs in my head, and while it wasnt "perfect" (whatever that means) you surpassed my expectations! Dont mean to doubt ya but damn... that's hard stuff.
bravo.
I got the bonus instrumental disc of "black clouds and silver linings," ive been thinking of posting a karaoke version of Wither, 2nd half of nightmare to remember, and mebbe even count of Tuscany. hehe. love those songs.
anywhoo. thanks for alerting me to this, I'm glad I didnt miss it.

It's definitely not note for note. A lot of the guitarwork was derived from a tab, more was played by ear or improvised, but some parts were slightly modified (in notation but not necessarily in vibe) because the song got too prickly to sing and play at the same time. I was also half tempted to sing in the cookie monster death metal scream, because it's James LaBrie behind the mic and he has way more clarity in his head voice than I have. But if you can hit his range and feel like singing DT songs then why not?
Actually, my tenor range is very strong but because the guitar is strapped to my shoulder it puts pressure on my voice and I lose power when I get further away from my comfort zone. Hence the added grit as it helped me cheat a bit. Nowadays I refrain from singing unless I have a guitar on me and it's been helping a lot.
