SPEED WEEK! The last week of August 24th through 31st. Coming soon to a Spontoon Island in your neighborhood! Here's an image from the early years of the annual Spontoon SPEED WEEK pedal-car races. A favorite of the short weekly movie news documentaries. The large number of entries may be a result of more local prosperity due to more international trade and visits by tourist cruise ships. Starting in 1933, there were entries from other Pacific region countries & islands.

At that age, I saw some, and maybe once got to fit in one. My impression was that working the pedal mechanism to get a smooth forward motion was much less intuitive than tricycle pedals. I made do with a coaster wagon. We did live on a hillside in a big city, and I'm surprised that most all of us neighborhoodds kids rapidly figured out that wheeled vehicles going down steep downhill streets should never be tried.
Fortunately, the road we lived on was pretty much flat past our house. I had inherited the pedal car from two older brothers who seemed to have outgrown it. It was never easy to propel! We brought it when we moved to another house a year later. It tended to bind up in the grass in the back yard (although there were a few smooth spots) but the road was a State Highway and even the builder of our house had lost his life to that traffic. We were well educated in safety before taking a bicycle on that killer strip if concrete. Mom and Dad did their job well. 60 years later, all of us are still in one piece (well, I had my appendix out) but a healthy respect for that road was instilled in us.
The sheet metal pedal car ended up in a back room upstairs in the house. I have no idea what happened to it after Dad passed on; it would be worth a fortune today.
