....quite literally, in fact.
My friend asked me why I am an insomniac. I told her it started when I used to have regular night terrors, and I go through phases of it sometimes now- just like I go through phases of night terrors still, occasionally.
She said 'ohhh, I've always wanted to have a night terror. I want to know what is so scary about them!'
No. No you do not. Trust me.
So I drew this for her. It's one of my night-terror demons, I guess you would call them. I don't like that term for them though, it isn't right.
It irritates me a bit in that I can't really draw as well as my imagination runs. I have a ridiculously overactive imagination.
Its body is similar to that of a hyena's, in that it has long brawny forelegs and powerful muscular hindlegs that are much shorter. It has.. some kind... of animal skull as a face. Weird horns. Tattered fur, showing lower ribcage and usually some innards hanging out (which I wasn't even going to attempt to draw.) Black, empty eye sockets with a red glow. Huge black talons. Spinal tail. Sharp teeth. Etc.
This one terrifies me most, I think. As I explained to my friend, most of the... beasts, are winged. All animal skulls (well, mostly) and various beasts, often patchworked corpses. But usually tattered, bloody, torn or burnt wings. In these night terrors, I can usually hide from the winged beasts. For longer, anyway.
With this one, always run. Never stop. It will find you *wherever* you hide. It can smell you, sense you, I don't know, whatever. But it always finds you.
And sadly always catches you, too.
And don't tell me 'it's your dream, you can do in it what you want.'
No, I can't. My imagination or mind or subconcious does not want me to escape for whatever reason. I just run, generally.
Oh, and they wouldn't scare me as much if it was one of those 'just as it got to me I woke up' things. Nah, I dream through a lot more than that which I won't really go into. Needless to say, only at the point when I'd actually physically die in real life from these attacks will I wake up.
Sometimes I let myself get caught to speed things up but... very rarely. The instinct to run, especially knowing what happens when you are caught, it almost unbeatably strong.
I don't know why I've never drawn them before. I must say, it is not good in that it... makes them more real. But my drawing skills are a poor tool to represent them, so it's alright I suppose.

Oh, it's okay. I used to get them every night when I was younger, but they're much, much less frequent now. I don't think I've had one since... Hrm. 9 months, a year maybe.
And night terrors are kind of intensified nightmares, I guess.
'A night terror, also known as a sleep terror or pavor nocturnus, is a parasomnia disorder characterized by extreme terror and a temporary inability to regain full consciousness.
The subject wakes abruptly from slow-wave sleep, with waking usually accompanied by gasping, moaning, or screaming while waking.'

Nahh it's alright- I very rarely have them now. I had them every night when I was little, though.
Most of the time, people can't remember them. Mine haven't changed since I was small though, other than that the 'beasts' have gotten more generically horrifying.
It's a bit odd but they don't scare me apart from when I'm asleep... if that makes sense. They should, but they've been around for years :P And they happen so rarely, I just forget about them now.

*whines* I do wish I could teach you how to dream like me Mishy, gonna see if I can find ways of teaching it. Being able to control everything in your dreams is exactly what you need *nuzzles gently*
Have you been managing to get some sleep of late hun?
The picture is nicely done... somehow it looks familiar though, gonna look into that also XD *huggles tightly*

Oh, I dream normally and stuff most of the time and during the normal times I have some control over my dreams :3
But night terrors are different. The dream has more control than you. It's... a bit odd. It's like, I can decide where to run, where to hide and everything? But I have no control over them. And I have no... 'abilities' or anything bar my usual self. It happens as it would if it were real life.

I have been looking into it since I posted it and you can learn to control night terrors. Much the same way as a normal dream, it's just a lot harder because the fear sort of takes over aparently and stops you from thinking clearly.
I do hope you have been sleeping ok lately though ^^ *nuzzles*
