Here's a pair of tongs I made that are for holding onto thinner sheet metal.
It also has the other purpose of holding onto thinner round stock that is about the thickness of a nail.
I heated up the tong jaws and put in a cold piece of round stock, squeezed them a bit and then hammered them together to create slot to allow the rod be held in there.
These were made from 3/4th in round bar.
