This is my 3rd and most successful attempt at making a spoon carving knife.
For the longest of time I just could not make this stupid thing the way it should be. First attempt was too thick, second was too wide, now this. It's thin, it's not too wide, the curve is not too aggressive.
This is made from some sort of spring steel I have that is probably 5160 and the handle was carved from part of a chair leg that looked to be made from beech. The fact that it turned this dark of brown from handling confirms it is beech.
These things are such a pain in the rear to sharpen. I had to make a whole new stropping tool just to hone the inside (Stropping tool is literally a piece of leather glued to a board or in this case a dowel. The leather is then rubbed with compound which is wax impregnated with abrasive to then further rub away material from the metal.)
This is a ride knife which means it can only shave the right side of your spoon with the least amount of tear-out (tear out is when you go against the grain of wood and it leaves a ragged surface from the fibers being torn out.)
I need to make a left side one or just a universal. I will probably just make a universal that has two bladed sides.
