I also wanted to add:
This technique is quite primitive and may not work with some unusual or bright color that includes a lot of details, stripes, patterns etc. But for simple characters and complex shadows (in a neutral setting) - it should work perfectly!

Oh, well...unfortunately, this is an integral part of this technique and to learn how to do one thing, you need an understanding (and skill) of the other. In general, this is how drawing works - if you know how to make lines, you should be able to paint them, if you want your picture to look full out - you will have to spend time studying such issues as rendering, composition, and so on.
