Testing out a Furry variation on my main character in RP and all things, Nicnevin (a.k.a. Habonde or Hecate). And I'm very interested and involved with Japanese culture too, and various mythologies, so I'm strongly considering a kitsune type thing like this picture, as my fursona.
Of course, I also really like dragons, gryphons, cats, and wolves, and feel different connections to them too.
I've seen the different negative opinions people have about them. Like Foxes, wolves, and cats are too widely used. Too many people choose them. Or dragons and gryphons are too "fantasy." Yeah. Those sorts of silly things.
Then there's the option of just sticking with my character as a Gargoyle.. but with that, I'd get a big-ol arguement from some people about what should be in the "Furry" fandom and such. 'Cause some Gargoyles (read: the ones without beaks or animal-esque snouts) are just too human-looking for some peoples' tastes.
Oh well. Basically, no matter what I choose as my main representative "fursona," SOMEONE will likely have an issue with it. I'll just have to get used to people not liking me.
Sad. I'm generally so likeable, too. XD
Anyway.. I think this version's growing on me the most.

Ya know what, You need to simply pick the animal that you love the most or you fell best represents you. Sure foxes are used too much but ilove them so much so my fursona is a fox. However i create several other characters such at otters dragons rabbits etc. and even have a Serapheline Seraph + Feline XD. Anyway it looks exceptionally awesome and i look forward to seeing more!
Thanky! And yeah, I agree about going with your feelings. My feelings just conflict 'cause there's a number of animals that I like so much.. and it turned into a ramble. ^_^ I already know I'm going to have a ton of characters come from this. I have alt-itis in everything else, so I doubt this'll be any different. XD
Pffaugh...who cares if a gargoyle is "furry" enough, or if a species is too this or that. A fursona is supposed to be your visual avatar chosen from your preferences and personality. Stick with what works best for you and fuck 'em.
For the record, I like this design...the black, white, and red are very striking how you've used them.

Indeedy. I doubt it'll actually be much of a problem at all, I just can't help but think about it, since I've heard stories from people. I'll just use my rambles on the topic to mentally prepare myself in case I ever have to defend my choice (or anyone else's for that matter) with a big "Fuck you."
Thankies for the comment and advice! :)

Nothing wrong with foxes especially if you have a design that stands out (the red on white is pretty unique). My furry persona is a fox which is wildly different from Zoe whom I've had as my gargoyle-esque persona for years and years.
Granted kitsune are very recognizable as an animal in japanese mythology there re still many other not as common ones that might be equally as interesting. Such as, Tanuki, lucky cats, snakes, and turtles just off the top of my head.
