well Subspace wasn't from Super Smash Brothers Brawl. the notion of Subspace as a place one could visit and even construct has been visited long-before. the earliest example I can think of is the 90s with Tenchi Muyo/Tenchi Universe as the location of Washu's lab
my idea of it works differently: the portal to subspace can be opened through strong magic or hard science, and even then in order to properly build there (and especially to live there) one must be an advanced alchemist in order to not stretch out the theory of conservation of matter. that is to say, one must use the basis of alchemy - transmutation of matter (since according to the Conservation of Matter it cannot be created nor destroyed) - to properly build without destabilizing the pocket of subspace with introducing too much new matter to the accessed area
