While Alan is usually make his bed sleeping on BLK's belly, Sometimes BLK is the one that needs some comforting after a long day. While Alan can't necessarily reciprocate at the level BLK can, sometimes all one needs is a place to lay one's head, and maybe a few pets along the neck for some good dreams.

I would think he was awake. Alan probably wiggled his way in saying he needed a spot to sit as well, but then BLK would have nodded off after some neck pets by Alan. Being big, BLK doesn't get to feel like the one being comforted or protected as much, so this probable would have been exceptionally comforting to get some tenderness directed at him without Alan's usual hijinks.
