First off this did indeed take me an embarrassingly huge amount of time. Definitely over 50-60 hours in the least.. It is also my first full digital illustration. I had this urge to make an image that is more dynamic and detailed after having been stuck making pinups for several months. I decided to color this digitally because 1. I want to learn how to do it properly, 2. traditional rarely prints as nice as digital in my experience.
This is my Rare 2011 calendar submission. My beast was the prehistoric short faced bear. I decided to make him battling a north American cave lion, the second largest carnivore (ok, the bear might have been an omnivore-but some studies suggest it might have been more carnivorous) of that time period after the short faced bear. The lion seems to have stumbled in the bear's territory--uh oh.
I chose to give the bear a more toned build since the short faced bear had longer limbs. The real short faced bear stood over 11 feet tall when standing upright and over 5 ft at the shoulder when on all fours.. Badass carnivore right there :D –so I had to adorn him with dire wolf skulls, pelts, and sabertooth claws and fangs. His markings are spectacle bear inspired, since it is it's closest living relative. The background is intentionally painterly in order to put the beasts in focus.
I learned a lot from this piece for sure-there are many things id like to go back and fix but I gotta move on to the next project!

Holy baby Zeus... this is... just. OMG
This is amazing! For a first digital image this is mind blowing! This is a complete illustration and the detail... omg the the detail.
The short-faced bear is made of badass win btw. I love the burning rage you can see in his eyes. That poor cave lion, hope he can run fast.

thanks! :)
Yeah I gave the bear the upper hand in this scenario, and made the lion smaller intentionally. The image is about the bear, not the lion. I'm sure american cave lions would have been decently efficient against a short faced bear, especially if they worked in prides. But for the purpose of the image it had to be about the bear. The composition also points to that, everything in it points to the bear as a focal point XD
short clip on the lion featured in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nB8Vadg0TlU badass :P (my fursona's species is based on this animal)

Ah, also, I dont know if you are implying that I was inspired by this piece but if so, it is purely coincidental that they are similar in weaponry anyways. Interesting how two people thought of giving a bear a pointly club XD
In my piece, I gave him a whooly rhino horn as a weapon. That was my inspiration!

ehh it is a character type from a game called Guild Wars and it reminded me of it thats all ^.=.^ (not my drawing >.=.< I wish I could do digital like that) http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Norn
I think bigger prints, like 11x17 ones, wouldactually come out really nice! All the detail is obviously lost in the uploaded version.
Thanks for your interest, I will have prints of this. But as of now i am not allowed selling any until the calendar's are sold out.

sekh...this is insanely awesome. its amazing to see that you're equally skilled with digital AND traditional - sometimes its not so easy to try both! also, the composition is wonderful and really draws attention to the bear. i love the action, the colors, the detail, and the sense of witnessing a 'story'.
i just...i remember when i first found your art a few years ago, and compared to this! wow. BLOWING MY MIND.
epic as hell.

I think the amount of detail is INCREDIBLE - and any more than this probably would not show up when printed anyway, you know? On-sreen you can blow it up as much as you like, but there's a point for printing when more detail just doesn't print/show up, so I think what you did is perfect!
Jesus in a CAN! X_X
I had to oggle this for almost 5 minutes before commenting, just to fully appreciate the sheer amount of breath-taking DETAIL in this masterpiece. The organic beauty of your texturing and the dramatic poses, and the flow and shape of the backdrop just tie this wondrous creation of yours together. A REAL genuine feast for the eyes. miss, you knocked this one outta the ballpark. WOW!

This is one of the most amazing anthro art pieces I've ever seen. The gradation and texture of the sky is beyond unbelievable and the fur is so richly detailed!
I'm embarrassed to admit I had never even seen your work until the AC Art show, and now you're one of my favorite artists in the fandom.
