“What did I tell you? Doesn’t this place look amazing?”
Smith gaped at the sight: A pristine lake untouched by civilization stretched for miles around them, and a thick line of trees grew around the lake, creating a natural wall around it that was occasionally broken up by a small beach composed of mud and small stones. The lake itself was so still he couldn’t imagine any waves forming sand around it. He knew the cabin they were assigned was in a remote location, but he had no idea how lucky they got. The Hippo took a curious step onto the rocky outcropping in his mud-caked boots, suddenly very glad he did not hike out here in his dress shoes. They clashed horribly with his formal suit, but his feet thanked him for it.
“We come out here all the time to take a swim and relax," Kiva said.
Vincent interrupted her and pointed to the half of the beach covered in stones. "The dirt isn't soft like sand, but it's better than those rocks."
Vincent turned around and stared off into the lake deep in thought. The longer Smith spent around them, the more frequently he noticed quirks like this. The Human was prone to spacing out whenever someone wasn’t directly addressing him. When Smith grabbed the camera hanging around his neck and began adjusting the settings, Kiva perked up and shuffled in front of him. Along the way she grabbed Vincent by the shoulder and led him to a dry spot on the beach. Smith, finished with his tinkering, held the device to his eye and got an idea of the frame.
“Can you two scoot over to the lef- right. The right for me? Good. Now, let’s see…”
Through the lens of his camera, a Human man in a jacket and jeans stood next to a towering Direwolf woman in a plain set of exercise clothes. Her massive hand rested on his shoulder and reached down to his torso, covering half of it with her lengthy digits. Wicked claws extended even further, though the man showed no signs of fear next to the enormous beast. There was a problem though. Her size was such that her neck and head were out of the frame. Smith flipped the camera vertically to try and get her in the frame, but it wasn't good enough. It still clipped her head out of frame.
“Kiva, can you get down on one knee for me?”
“Ha, can’t get a good picture down there?” The Wolf acknowledged him and lowered herself to the Earth. Along the way, her arm slid around Vincent’s neck and pulled him in closer. Once she was on their level, Kiva forced him into a headlock between her arm and a breast that was larger than his head. Even crushed between all of her, he showed no emotion other than annoyance.
“Well? Take the picture!" she chuckled. Kiva tilted her head to the side and lifted it upward, presenting her teeth to the camera. Her attitude and pose reminded him of a rebellious high-school-aged adolescent on picture day who wouldn't listen to the photographer. In most predatory species, showing your teeth was a sign of disrespect. Doing it in a picture created a much more casual mood, head-locked husband aside.
Click. The mechanism inside the camera snapped. Smith wasn’t going to deny her this. After all, it added a very personal touch. Vinny attempted to wrap his arms around her waist but only made it 3/4’s of the way. Smith took another picture. Click. Kiva took her free arm and wrapped it around Vincent, enveloping him in her mountainous embrace. Click. Next, she squeezed him harder and the man had his face smothered by her chest. Click. Smith could swear he heard him say a muffled “Kiva please.”
"Alright, good." he announced to them. "Now Kiva, down on both knees and less crass please."
Claws scraped on dirt while she lowered herself closer to the ground. This time, her chest was below her husband’s head and gave him room to breathe. He was flustered but no worse for wear. Both of the Direwolf’s powerful arms gently wrapped around him, cradling his comparatively diminutive form. In response, Vincent threw one arm behind her neck and barely reached the other side with his fingers. He placed his second hand above her breast and leaned his head into the fluff of her neck. The couple stared wistfully into the camera. Vincent's apathetic facial features worked well for him. Humans tend to look good directly facing cameras. Wolves, however, tend to have photos of their faces taken from the side in profile. Kiva looked like a completely different person with her hard crimson eyes juxtaposing her gentle handling of her delicate partner.
Click. Smith tilted the camera on its side. Click. He spun it back to normal but got on his knees for a different angle. Click click click.
“Alright,” he grunted, standing up. “I’ve got a good collection here. We can turn these into a couple of photos. Maybe a collage and a big frame for your wall."
Relief flooded their faces, and the couple relaxed. Kiva stood to her full height and dusted off her knees while Vincent shook his legs a couple of times and turned around to stare back at the lake. Kiva copied him and joined his side. On instinct, Vincent reached up and gripped her hand then leaned into her side with his head resting on her waist. Smith watched all this happen in the span of a few moments, and subconsciously lifted the camera.
