CHAPTER 7. VISION
Upon arriving at the hotel, I took a shower. I put on sports clothes and went for a run on the beach as usual. I didn't even have breakfast. I was not in the mood after that embarrassment at Lorel's house. After five minutes of jogging, I stopped. I wanted to feel the fresh sea air once more. I closed my eyes and tried to relax by taking a deep breath. I was at it when suddenly, a deep voice mixed with a loud roar almost scared me to death.
“Buuuuu!!! Grrrrr!!”
“Shit!!! What the hell?!” I shouted, alarmed.
“Ha ha ha ha...you should have seen your face!” a familiar voice said suddenly.
“Vroeg! How dare you!” I said, confused. But the skunktaur couldn't stop laughing.
“Are you insane?”
“And you? Were you practicing meditation? Because if so, you did it very badly, son.”
“No! I was not practicing meditation! I just wanted...bah! Forget it.” I growled angrily.
“Sometimes life surprises you. Like the scare I gave you. The important thing is to react in the right way. Your face really looked very funny.”
“Vroeg, please stop,” I begged.
“OK. Calm down, son. Is it okay if we walk for a while?”
“Walk? I thought you were doing nothing but throwing your lazy ass on that mound of grass.”
“Hmmm...yes. But now I want to walk with you,” hy calmly responded to my attempt at revenge.
“Hmmm...alright...” I said resigned.
Despite hys age, Vroeg still looked slender on all four legs. The wind lifted the long hairs on hys back and tail. Hys head was almost level with mine.
“Wait, what about the diadem?” hy asked suddenly. “Won't you use it?”
“I used it to help a friend yesterday. But now, I don't care if you read my head, you know? Maybe you can prosecute her a bit,” I said crestfallen. As we walked, Vroeg was silent for a long time. Then hy unexpectedly he requested, “Tell me about your life on earth. From your childhood. Do you remember something?”
“Do you really want to know? So use your mind reading skills.”
“No, Esteban. It is not as easy as you think. I'd rather you tell me, come on, I want to know.”
“Ufff...well. I remember my parents vaguely. At the age of three they separated, I was told. At five, my mother left me in the care of elderly relatives. I never heard from her again. At 15, those relatives died a natural death and with the money they left me, I entered the academy to study engineering.”
“And...why did you decide to be an engineer?”
“Well, I noticed that I had mathematical skills and in addition, I remembered that there was a delegation of skunktaur workers carrying out a civil project near my city. I liked seeing how they worked. I think one of them spoke to me and gave me the idea. I made sense of it and followed hys advice.”
“Hmmm...I see. So a colleague told you to study engineering. And what else can you tell me about your parents?”
“Well, before separating, I remember that they argued a lot. There were banging noises. My mother cried constantly, while I played outside. I remember there was violence between them...My father...he beat me too. Many times...I...I was afraid...I ran away, but he always caught me. I begged Daddy not to hit me, but...he didn't know how he stopped, he looked like a monster...I don't know how he stopped.” I said with tears in my eyes, as the anguish of those memories flooded my head.
“Do you hate them?”
“Vroeg, they made me suffer a lot. If you ask me, I do hate them. Especially my father! He was a shitty human being. And also my mother! Because she was unable to fight for me!” I exclaimed through clenched teeth and tears on my cheeks.
“I'm sorry Vroeg,” I said, sobbing.
“But me, I still don't feel it!” I managed to hear Vroeg utter, before everything turned to darkness...
When I woke up, I was still on the beach. Hy was lying on the mound of grass, staring up at the sky. My head was comfortably resting on...Vroeg's body? I got up right away.
“Ah! You came back!” said the smiling skunktaur, as hy sat on hys hindquarters.
“What the hell happened?” I asked, confused.
“You just lost consciousness for a moment,” Vroeg replied, looking at the waves of the sea.
“But why?” I questioned, worried.
“I guess that's what happens when you go for a run without having breakfast,” hy answered with a smile. Next, hy extracted a bread-like substance from a backpack that hy was carrying around hys waist.
“Here. Eat son,” hy pointed out as hy handed me the food. It tasted delicious; I ate it all. I was very hungry and it had only been a couple of hours since I left the hotel. Then I drank from a liquid that Vroeg hymself gave me. It was refreshing. After satisfying my appetite, I sat down next to hym to look at the horizon. On the beach, there were a lot of people at that time. Adults and children of different species had fun enjoying the sun and the sea. Suddenly Vroeg, without taking hys eyes off the horizon, pointed out:
“Esteban...do you see that human surfing? Is it a sport that you do very well?” hy asked.
“I do see it,” I affirmed. Indeed, in the distance, a surfer was playing gracefully in the sea.
“Observe how that unfolds on the waves, with skill. He does not know how that mass of water that he rides will behave, how fast it will drag him, or the turbulence with which it will descend. He can't help being carried by the wave, he just goes over it, in perfect balance, going up, down and moving forward. He does not let himself be overwhelmed by it, but always remains on top, and maintains control of himself, until he descends smoothly, when the wave dies down, without falling off the board.
“Life is like the sea tossed by waves. Always in movement. Not knowing where it will take you. But how do you act in front of it? Are you the surfer who glides in balance? Or are you just a piece of inert board, lashed by turbulence, and the onslaught of waves, floating adrift?
“Do not allow the waves of the past, drag you to their rhythm defining your destiny. Ride that turbulence with skill. Become the surfer, son. Do not hold a grudge against the past, or look fearfully into the future. Just stay awake in the present,” Vroeg concluded, as hy put an arm around me. Hys words, for some reason, made me happy that morning. Hys voice was melodious and he managed to remove all concern from me. I had nothing to answer. I just smiled.
“Vroeg. Can I ask you a favor?” I said after a long time. “Your fur smells very good. Can I lay my head on you again? Just a little. I would like to be like this, just a little more,” I said sighing. The skunktaur, smiling, agreed to turn to hys side again, offering me hys body which I once again used as a soft pillow. It was delicious to feel that smell, next to the wind on my face, and the Chakonan sun, which filtered from time to time between the branches of the tree. I felt calm, and happy. After a few minutes, Vroeg spoke again.
“Esteban. I must tell you that, just like you, I too will have to leave town. It will be shortly.”
“And where are you going?” I asked. I felt hys body move with a deep sigh.
“I do not know yet. I only know, that I will have to leave my family and friends.”
“Do you have a clan?” I inquired.
“No. They are my children and grandchildren. I never formed a clan. I only had one partner. Hy died a few years ago.”
“Oh. Sorry.”
“Do not worry. It's fine. I wish you were with me when I go.”
“Sure, Vroeg. If I travel before you, I'll come and say goodbye to you. I promise you,” I answered, then closed my eyes and rested on the padded body of the skunktaur. In that state, I wasn't even bothered by Lorel, despite feeling used. Being with Vroeg, in that instant, I felt a peace that I had never experienced before.
