Breyer's Stablemate quarter horse mare has quite the history! First, the mold was originally sculpted by Maureen Love Calvert for ceramics manufacturer Hagen-Renaker, as a stallion, the "head-down horse." When Breyer later licensed the mold for reproduction in plastic, they changed it into a mare. Then, for whatever reason, they only produced a small number of them before discontinuing all colors. The mold made a couple of reappearances as a couple of very limited editions in recent years, but all colors of this model command high prices, even those in damaged, custom "body" condition.
I managed to snag one of these well-worn models, and decided to add a new color to this rare mold's wardrobe. I started by removing the Breyer logo and seams, and then sculpting stallion parts (bringing him back to his roots!) I painted him in my favorite red bay blanket appaloosa and glossed his eyes, nostrils, mouth, and hooves. He does have some very tiny flaws in his blanket, but otherwise he'd be an awesome addition to a conga of this mold!
