Talking about this just gave me a neat idea for a new ability. It would allow the pokemon to use items other than potions and ethers/elixirs as consumable held items, but with a reduced effectiveness for ones such as HP recovery items. I know it could maybe be kind of broken, but just a sudden random thought.
I think the only reason they do it like that, is cause they know not everyone would be able to find the vending machine and many aren't patient enough to keep buying 1 of the needed drinks. Lol, I love those machines. <XD But, you are right. Especially since in Mt. Moon you can buy them in stacks.
