Well the pistol is an adaptation of a pistol that is seen in the comic. However equipment designs did drift in design depending on the artists working on any particular issue. I don't think there was any form of Empire World Book for artists to work from.
That said I thought the pistol reminded me of the Russian SR-1 pistol Link so I used the SR-1 as a starting point for my pistol.
