Arke Dougenis - Annotated With References By Forgess
Forgess gave me these references for Arke. While i did upload the redline of the anatomy a while ago i am now deleting that and submitting the full array of references the artist gave me.
The pictures are... not exactly the ones i received.
I have taken them from wikipedia/wikimedia and are either a cropped version of what i had received or portray the same species and are therefore subject to the terms about sharing them from wikimedia which is easier than trying to share from some random blog.
Plus, some of the original ones i had received were deleted by their author... sooo... π yeah, i did not feel comfortable sharing those. ππ

ah so that's the birds she was inspired from. Her pattern was pretty obvious tho :> I love bleeding heart pattern a lot <3
The breast idea is also cool. I can think about few explanations of "breast" shape, thanksfully, bird anatomy has a lot of tricks to make this body part looks like this. But this one is interesting. Head resting feathers makes me wanna pet her.
Spinifex pigeons wing shape? Interesting. Honestly from this post > https://www.furaffinity.net/view/42148137/ I've started doubting what wing type (https://twitter.com/Tazz_Bluebird/status/1267186331698028547?s=20) she could have. Mentioned dynamic soaring, which, as I thought, a thing of long winged birds (sea birds, for example, albatross > https://nas-national-prod.s3.amazon.....tok=cWvZuHbj).
I honestly had troubles searching flying spinifex pigeons, but here is crested pigeon https://dslrephoto.files.wordpress....../dwj_9312.jpg. and they seem to have "speed type" of the wings. But I must say, this shot https://images.theconversation.com/files/193690/original/file-20171108-6733-aiwxzv.jpg?ixlib=rb-1.1.0&q=45&auto=format&w=1200&h=1200.0&fit=crop makes me think about Arke wings a lot ngl
Tho you've mentioned only wing bone in the bow post, not the wings itself, so, what wing shape is really preferable?
I hope I am not going too deep with the wings antomy ππ
"funniest part is the references are mostly male" I know the feel XD I have used male american kestrel markings for female anthro myself.

She should have been a thermal glider, there is no other way for her to fly, honestly, she is too big.
But concessions were made for the sake of art and she looks like a night glider because her "arms" are already uncanny long and would (otherwise) have been far longer.
In the 3d model the wing and shape were not considered at all, we are nowhere near the stage where we are considering shape.
But thank you for the references here these are helpful.
When i mentioned the wing-tail shape i meant "in her resting/closed position" as you can see her standing there which has the wings looking like that.
Apologies for the misunderstanding (and also for taking 27 hours to even read your comment. π )
There is no way she can fly like a pigeon.
Pigeon themselves in wing shape have the classic elliptical wings, despite being used as messengers they are quite poor gliders and more "power flyers".
Which is why they were good messengers in times of war because by needing to rest often they were not easy targets to pick in flight like a soaring bird would be. π
https://images.theconversation.com/.....733-aiwxzv.jpg
But she has a flight similar to that of an owl, which... "magically" can also double as a thermal glider.
https://wallpaperaccess.com/full/3186264.jpg
To be fair if you look too much into it it starts coming apart because it is still a fictional character and concessions were made for art.

So... yeah in theory she should look like a vulture when her wings are open because that is how she flies:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipe.....on_in_Peru.jpg
In practice she resembles an owl "because art". π
If those two can me made similar (in some way) yeah i would be deeply interested.

Oh I see! thanks! that honestly how I imagined her wings to be look like (vulture/owl mix) because well those are big birds. Tho even on the harpy image you have here, their wings look more like sea bird wing. So yeah, I agree, it is really hard to come up for fictional creature look realistic enough x3 But I wanted to ask to make sure which wing shape is really the one. Aaaand I love to discuss fictional characters anatomy, so I am glad those refs are helpful :3
Also, here is, as I know, the heaviest flying birs, Great bustard (oh lol this species name is much more poetic in russian). https://cdn.download.ams.birds.corn.....68717331/1800. "male is typically 90β105 cm (2 ft 11 inβ3 ft 5 in) tall, with a length of around 115 cm (3 ft 9 in) and has a 2.1β2.7 m (6 ft 11 inβ8 ft 10 in) wingspan. The male can range in weight from 5.8 to 18 kg (13 to 40 lb)". Maybe they would be agreat reference for her?
here is Griffon vulture weight/wing comprasion: 93β122 cm (37β48 in) long with a 2.3β2.8 m (7.5β9.2 ft) wingspan. In the nominate race the males weigh 6.2 to 10.5 kg (14 to 23 lb).
And, here are some fancy bird wings over here> https://cdn.download.ams.birds.corn.....219393501/1800 this is Pennant-winged nightjar. Guess it has nothing to do with Arke design, beside the fact she has pretty "soft" feathers on some drawings for pose reasons. Just throwing it here as well, maybe it will give you some ideas x3 If she had some long feathers on her wing, they would look more like harpy images when they are folded? I don't know ^^'

this was literally the reference pose you see in the image above on the picture π
but yeah her wings are not like this despite her needing those updrafts to stay afloat.
https://images.fineartamerica.com/i.....rilyn-hunt.jpg
officially she is 1.3 meters at the shoulder when standing (head is hard to calculate with her) and weighs about 40 kg
So... about the same as the the Argentavis but with 1/2 to 2/3 the wingspan and legs that are not almost inside her armpits. ππππ―
Seriously though the most ridiculous part of my character is that her legs are in the worst position imaginable for flying and landing.
And in the picture i posted and you linked where she is shooting that "long greatbow"β’ everybody is focusing on her wings being in the way. And nobody is looking at how those legs can't possibly sustain that position, even if her arms can. If she flies her arms are possibly the most trained part of her body to stay in tension, her legs instead can't possibly be like that unless she has legs like a pink flamingo or something that can lock too, and if she has, then her hip is in the worst position possible like that and it cannot be trained.
Basically "in order to look good sacrifices were made."
As an engineer i'm quite used to prototypes being crap and the final result being much better after 50 thousands prototypes.
also: as usual FA forgot i was answering to you. π so i had to delete and repost.

If somebody has a way to make it look good and also not suck anatomically, believe me, i'm all ears.As an engineer i'm quite used to prototypes being crap and the final result being much better after 50 thousands prototypes.

Yeah flying humanoid creatures are just.. Ah.. Forget about reality or change earth gravity xD
Just thought to drop more birds you would like to know about, thats it :>
Also thanks for the replying with details, I am sure this comment section would be helpfull for anybody interested in her ^^
