The wind howled, leaves rustled, and unseen creatures flapped their wings in the darkness. Melina had underestimated the time it would take to reach the next town and was now trekking through the dark on her own. It would not have been so bad or frightening if it were an academy excursion, but it wasn't and she had no fellow mages or instructors to call on for help. She dared not use her magics too frequently, as it would take time to meditate to gather the energies that flowed throughout the world. She realized that maybe she'd done just that, as her staff dimmed and shone no more than a few meters ahead. She cursed under her breath, drawing its remaining energy directly to herself, feeling a sensation like lightning as the power settled. She would just have to move very cautiously and use the base of her staff to poke around for the edges of the road and stay within its boundaries. And she'd also have to stop illuminating her surroundings for every critter on every branch. It was going to be a long night.
