I wonder if this was the case of having an itch that just got so unbearable that without really thinking our unfortunate went to scratch it and just slipped a little, with a rather nasty nosebleed. It could have been worse though, at least the eye wasn't involved.
I imagine that while talons are probably stronger, it's altogether nastier than a broken nail if there's an injury, a lot of bleeding and not so easy to heal.
