What did you think of Ponyo? I was rather disappointed. I got the feeling Disney told Miyazaki to tone down his "rhetoric." Sorry, but Pom Poko was pure brilliance, as was Mononoke Hime.

I'll have to see "Millenium Actress." Miyazaki has been about the only anime I like, aside from "Akira," though I didn't care for his new one, "Steam Boy."

I liked Ponyo a lot, actually. I'm just a sucker for that style of art. The story was simple, and didn't really have any enviromental message etc(well, okay, humans ruining oceans yadda yadda), but I don't think good stories have to be, uh, very clever XD My english is kinda failing me here... I never saw Pom poko, and Mononoke is actually one of my least favourite Ghibli movies. Can't really say why, just personal preferences I quess. Some scenes were really cool thought, especially that forest elk thingies feet making plants grow and die 8)

Millenium actress wasn't as good as I thought it would be, but it's worth a watch. I only like a few animes myself, the style has just kinda stuck with me haha.

I watch Miyazaki for his messages, style, and dialog. If you haven't watched Mononoke Hime in Japanese (with proper subtitles), you haven't watched it at all. Pom Poko is simply brilliant, and I cry every single time I watch it (and sometimes even just thinking about it.) The reason is because I am empathetic, and consider myself more animal than human. I despite was the human species has done to our planet and our neighbors on it, and this movie simply moves me very much, and makes me dearly wish I were in the position those tanuki are depicted as being in...or maybe more like I already feel like I am there, but as a wolf. I don't know. Anyway, find it, and watch it. It's awesome as hell.

I can't stand english dubs, so don't worry xD I myself appreaciate his messages, but I don't except all of the films to have a deep meaning. I am a visual person myself, and even if the story is fantastic, I can't bring myself to appreciate it unless it has some visual strentgh too. Curiously enough, I think part of the reason I didn't like Mononoke is that I couldn't empathize with any of the characters. Humans were dicks, but so were the gods etc etc.
I'll check pompoko out if I ever come across it o/

May I ask how do you get such neat contours of the white areas/figures? Do you draw their outlines with pencil before coloring or you work directly with the watercolor?

Yes, I usually sketch very lightly with pencil before painting and erase them later or use masking fluid that can be peeled off when the paint is dry :)
