CHAPTER 10 HEALING
The next morning, I woke up to two huge, warm hairballs. Regt and Sorah looked calm, after what they experienced last night. Sorah seemed to be sleeping peacefully. At least her face looked more cheerful. It was funny to see Regt snoring, as his huge belly rose and fell.
I tried to get up carefully, so as not to wake them up. I stealthily got to my feet and tried to get out of bed. When I was about to do it, I felt arms holding me and pulling me back.
“I caught you!” I heard Regt say, as he made me fall on top of him, closing his arms around me. No matter how hard I tried, it was impossible for me to overcome the force of his embrace. It was amazing how strong these creatures are.
“Look Sorah! The puppy wants to escape! Heh heh!” Exclaimed Regt laughing. Sorah opened her eyes and smiled at us too.
“Take care honey. Don't go hurting him,” she said, as she got up from the bed to her full height. She was naked. I confess that I was a bit ashamed, because although she was not a human woman, her bodily characteristics were too similar. I couldn't help blushing.
“I'm going to make breakfast,” she said happily before disappearing behind the door.
“She is very cute, isn't she? What do you think of her, Esteban?” I was speechless at the question. I knew I had to choose my answer with extreme care.
“Ehhh...yes. You have a nice wife, Regt.”
“Excuse my daring, Esteban. But I couldn't help it. In this way, my son and I sometimes played in the mornings. And you...you remind me a lot of him. I'm sorry if I scared you.” His words touched me. His kindness and warmth kept reminding me of happy times from my early childhood, before everything fell apart.
I turned toward Regt and told him, “When you carried me on your back in the sand, I remembered my father when he carried me in the same way, when I was a small child. That was beautiful. And now that I see them both...I think what it would be like to have had a normal childhood, a happy childhood.”
“In all races, in all species, and in all worlds, there are no perfect parents, Esteban. We all make mistakes.” His words seemed accurate to me.
“Tha...thanks Regt. Thanks for that. And for everything. Being with you has made me understand, and sublimate—in some way—my internal pain. Thanks.”
“And you Esteban, you have brought us the joy of remembering our son, in the puppy that Sorah and I see in you.” He pointed out with emotion. I couldn't help being moved either. I rested my head on his chest and felt his heart beat strong and generous. It was inevitable that I would feel like a child again.
After a couple of minutes, I got up. At least I had slept in pants. Great was my surprise when I found out that Regt, like Sorah, was also naked.
“Hey you pervert!” I said jokingly.
“Eh? We are renzar, and we live in Chakona...what did you expect?” he answered with irony. After a while, Sorah—now dressed—came to get us for breakfast. After cleaning up a bit, I sat down with them in the dining room.
“Esteban, when you get to the Skunktaur Archipelago, give us a call,” requested Sorah.
“And if you have a problem with those creatures, just let me know. And we will fix things in the ‘renzar style’” Regt said in turn, showing his fists. I smiled inside. They really made me feel like family, with their genuine concern for me, and because of that, it was increasingly difficult for me to get away from them.
“I promise I'll let you know, Sorah. And I don't think I’ll have problems Regt so don't worry. Thanks for everything.”
At the end of the delicious breakfast, we said goodbye with emotion. Sorah again had tears in her eyes. And although Regt was sad too, he tried not to show it. We hugged again and after saying goodbye, Regt took me to the city center. I asked him to leave me there, as I planned to visit Lorel, just as I had promised.
When I got to the chakat’s house, I knocked on the door. After several attempts, I thought there was no one home. I was about to call hir on the phone, when suddenly, a sleepy Lorel appeared behind the door.
“Esteban! How nice to see you, darling. Come in please,” shi declared happily, while shi took hold of my neck and gave me a tender kiss on the lips. Shi wore a kind of robe on hir torso, which did not hide hir attractive figure.
“Do you want a drink?” shi offered.
“No thanks Lorel.”
“Esteban. I was going to tell you that I had a partner, but I didn't and...”
“Why? Because am I human?”
“No, because you are from Earth, and you are not used to our way of life. That you're human, I don't care. On the contrary. I love it; I already told you. I was afraid that you would not accept me. I know very well that humans on Earth are not like those here.”
“Lorel, you're right. I am a human raised on Earth. And because of that, I don't know any other way to love. I don't know if I could share you with other creatures.”
“But you can learn, honey. All non-Chakonan humans have learned and accepted our culture. I could teach you,” shi insisted with pleading eyes. Hir gaze radiated tenderness, and hir figure was delightfully beautiful.
“Lorel, maybe, one day. But now, I'm not ready. I'm sorry. I cannot be part of a clan.”
“Esteban...”
“Lorel. You deserve the best. Find the right people for you, who are worthy of your love.”
“You are adequate, Esteban. Since I saw you in my bar, I can feel it here—inside,” shi said with moistened eyes.
“Lorel...” I said, looking at hir tenderly, “...today I am leaving for the Archipelago, New Bletchley. And I came to say goodbye.” Hearing those words, shi leaned hir head on my chest and began to sob.
“It was very beautiful what you taught me, believe me. But now, I'm not ready for this. I couldn't be happy this way.”
“Then go. I will not be an obstacle to your happiness,” shi declared with tears in hir eyes.
“Forgive me, Lorel.”
“Grrr ...Go now, Esteban!” shi roared. I turned towards the exit and left the place. When Lorel closed the door, I turned around again and laid my head on it. I could clearly hear the cry of the chakat on the other side. I walked away crestfallen. Sometimes being honest with yourself—and with others—has its price.
I boarded the train that took me back to the hotel. When I arrived at the reception, a foxtaur dressed in uniform was waiting for me.
“Mr. Melinao? I'm the immigration agent...”
“Yes. I know who you are. I remember,” I uttered with some reluctance.
“Hey, well, I came to inform you that your quarantine is over and that I will remove your locator bracelet. From now on, you will be able to move freely around Chakona.”
“Thank you very much,” I replied, while the official finally removed that strange device from my arm, with a special mechanical device. After that, I went up to my room to take a shower. As the water trickled down my body, I thought about the things that had happened to me and the people I had met during this short stay in the city of Amistad. I had understood many situations, and that understanding had brought me a peace of mind, which I had never felt before. They were eight intense days, and beautiful at the same time. Suddenly, I wanted to see Vroeg. I missed hys company and hys comforting words. Today would be the last day to see hym, one more time.
I finished dressing and packed my suitcase. The sun had already passed noon and was getting into the afternoon. Since I hadn't had lunch, I decided it would be a good idea to share a new picnic with Vroeg before I left. I went down to the lobby with my suitcase. I signed out of the hotel, and said goodbye to good old Blukast.
“Good luck, Mr. Melinao. I wish you the best at Dewclaw.”
“Thank you my friend.”
“Ah, I almost forgot. While outside, you received a call from the university. They left a message that they will be waiting for you to be on time first thing in the classroom tomorrow morning.”
“Okay. I will be present. Thank you very much,” I answered, after which I left the hotel to buy a snack to share it with my skunktaur friend.
