This carver was the master who trained Joseph Lamson and William Mumford, and to this day we don't know his real name.
Correct. The man basically revolutionized stonecarving as an art in the greater Boston area. And the only evidence of his existence is his being referred to in someone's writing from the period as "the stone cutter from Boston", who was positively connected to a specific stone commissioned by the writer.
