"Come on! We're not gonna make it!" Rika shouted.
"I'm running as fast as I can!" Kyubimon shouted back.
As Rika rode on her back, Kyubimon kept her eyes locked on the destination she was rushing towards: a dome-shaped ship rocketing through the digital sky, acting as an ark for its passengers.
She and Rika, alongside various other friends, had traveled to the Digital World to rescue an ally of theirs from the Digimon Deva, the dreaded group of rogue Digimon that had stepped up their attacks in recent weeks. While they were there, the team had also hoped to end their attacks on the human world once and for all. Much to their gratitude, their efforts were successful; they'd managed to convince the Digimon Sovereign, those who had launched the attacks, to stand down, hopefully marking the end of this tense relationship between the two worlds.
But now, they had to make their way back home, which was where the ark came in. The rest of the team was already on board, with Rika and Kyubimon needing to hurry as fast as possible to arrive before it left this world.
As for why there was a need to rush at all, the ark was under attack. Large, gelatinous blobs of pink-red goop were rising up from an abyss below, seriously damaging everything they touched. They were being sent up by a larger pool of the same kind of material resting at the bottom: a new, mysterious entity that the Sovereign had simply referred to as the D-Reaper. None of them knew for sure what it was or where it came from, but there were suspicions that it was some sort of artificial intelligence program gone rogue.
Whatever it was, these attacking orbs were forcing the ark to make its escape early, or else be destroyed, permanently stranding its passengers in the Digital World.
"C'mon, guys, you're almost there!" Takato yelled from the opened back hatch once he saw the speeding duo. His voice was hard to hear amidst the rubble and destruction around him caused by the D-Reaper, with the geography collapsing all around them.
As soon as Kyubimon made it to the cliff, she bounded off it in a powerful leap, right before that cliffside tip was hit by an orb and sent falling away.
The ark was so close. Her jump was going to just barely be enough to make it ...
"NNGHH!!!"
Kyubimon's white underside took a massive, painful blow as a D-Reaper orb managed to hit it, just as she was inches away from the ship. The force was strong enough to send Rika flying off her back with a scream. Thankfully, Takato was able to grab her arm and pull her safely inside the vessel.
Kyubimon, however, was not so lucky. Those blobs were much, much stronger than they looked; the impact was devastating enough to knock the consciousness out of her almost immediately. Her limbs went numb as they flailed helplessly, her mane and tails blowing in her descent.
The only thing her broken-up hearing could register in those few seconds were the faint, echoing cries of her tamer.
"Turn around! Turn the- ... -roun- ... -now!"
"Too late ... -on't make i- ..."
"... -namon!!"
A dull ringing roared in Kyubimon's ears as she stirred awake.
As she tried to rise, she felt like weights had been strapped to her arms and legs, forcing her to use more energy to move them. She felt the slightest bit dizzy, and the pressure on her entire body felt unnaturally high. Almost as if it was coming from the air itself ...
Once her vision became clear enough, she saw that in front of her were two arms rather than forelegs; she had de-digivolved back into Renamon. She rubbed her head, shaking it to readjust to the waking world again. Taking a deep breath, Renamon kept her mind calm, allowing it to recall what had led to this moment and where she was now.
A desperate escape attempt to the ship, being hit, falling ... falling where?
Into a ditch, apparently. At least, that was what she saw as she looked around. Or rather, it seemed, rolling into one after hitting the ground higher up, judging by how there was a ceiling directly above her instead of sky. The landscape around her was nothing but solid, dark-indigo rock, with not a hint of life to be seen.
Renamon feebly got herself onto her feet and made her way over to the nearest wall. With its various protrusions and cracks, it looked like she could climb up it. Getting one of her white feet tucked safely into one of said cracks, she hoisted herself up and started climbing.
Little did she know of the two narrow eyes peeking at her from within the rock ...
Once she reached the top, Renamon saw that things didn't look too much different. She was in a series of large, dark caverns, with this particular stretch having several more ditches and passageways littered throughout. The vixen looked up and saw a long, narrow tunnel and hole in the rock ceiling meters above her. She surmised that she had fallen through there earlier to get here. With it looking to be much closer to the sky, it was the only way she could imagine surviving a fall to this far below.
However long ago it was, though, she had no idea.
But what concerned her was that what little she could see of the sky was a translucent red. It appeared to be slightly shifting, a sludge-like texture that matched the orbs from the D-Reaper.
The D-Reaper, Renamon thought. What has it been doing? Have the Sovereign not fought it off?
The yellow fox took her next steps forward to get a better look, hoping to maybe climb up through this opening.
But in the next instant, she caught a brief glimpse of something moving behind her.
As she whipped around, Renamon gasped as a group of six red tentacles popped up from the pit she'd just climbed, rushed at her, and wrapped around her. Two of them pinned her left arm to her side, another wrapped around her right, purple-sleeved wrist, two got her right thigh and left ankle, and another squeezed her neck.
The tentacles instantly began dragging her to the edge. In response, Renamon dug her feet into the floor and tightened her coiled legs to halt herself. But it did no good, as her attackers didn't let up.
As pink-red ooze and blobs emerged to seal up the ceiling tunnel, Renamon's heels desperately clung to the edge of the cliff. Her tight legs bent and strained as the coils inched their way up them. The tentacle around her neck slid up to cover her mouth, and she squirmed a little in response.
"Rrph," she grunted, reaching her right arm up to try and pry it away.
That little movement was enough to capsize her heels off the edge, sending her collapsed form over the cliff.
She hit the wall hard, but managed to grasp onto the edge with her one available, coil-gripped hand. Her claws gripped the surface like her life depended on it, fighting back against the stubborn pull of the tentacles. They shifted and tightened themselves around her, causing her to wince and moan through the one around her mouth and neck.
As she saw a few more tentacles coming to assist, Renamon knew she had to act fast. With some effort, she pulled her pinned arm up just barely enough to cut through the tentacles holding it to her side. She tried to bend her legs up to reach the coils around them, but they were being pulled straight down, almost painfully so. Just as she brought her other arm up to help her get back up the cliff, the newly-arrived tentacles grabbed her at the waist and wrapped her ankles together, and she was shot down.
Right as she hit the ground, Renamon reached over to slice off the appendages around her legs. She then moved hastily to rapidly cut the rest of her body free, kicking the remnants of them off of her. The tentacles writhed chaotically, before retreating back into the ground of the ditch.
The shaken Digimon quickly climbed up the wall again before she could be attacked again, back up to where she'd been taken from.
As she feared, the ceiling tunnel was now completely blocked up, with the ooze leaking into the chamber itself. Every other exit out of here was being similarly sealed, which would leave her trapped here. Before that could happen, Renamon darted through the nearest one. Not taking the chance that the sludge would catch up, she sped along through what turned out to be a fairly short tunnel. After only a few minutes, it began expanding, and Renamon could soon see its opening.
Seconds later, she was through. She turned around, not seeing any signs of anything coming towards her, and concluding that nothing was chasing her.
What she saw when she looked in front of her, however, wasn't reassuring in the slightest.
She was staring at a massive crater that gave her a view of everything. What clearly used to be plant life, like trees or bushes, was now turned to stone, or was mutated into a sickly dark red and black. The stone ones had massive scarlet tentacles wrapped around them, far bigger than the ones she'd just faced, with many more sprawled idly throughout the crater. The rocky terrain was infected with swirling streaks of more red, black, pink, and dark purple. It matched the sky that was coated in what looked like a dome or force-field of the blob-like substance she'd seen earlier. Renamon saw pockets of sludge bursting out from the crevices of the environment, sometimes alongside new tentacles that seemed to browse around before settling still.
In the distance, she could see bizarre figures wandering around. They were wraiths with cloth-like bodies, pumpkin-like faces, and cord-like pendulum limbs with sickles at the ends. She also spotted many bird-like creatures with eyespots on their wings flying around, none of which she could recognize as any species she knew. They seemed to be right at home in this new landscape, as if they were a part of it themselves.
One of them was currently circling around her. It didn't attack, but it seemed particularly interested in the bright-yellow Digimon. She scrunched her face up in worry.
Two red tentacles then suddenly came bursting out from the rock beneath her and wrapped firmly around her ankles. Renamon stomped on one of them to halt its progress, then bent down to slash up the other. The one remaining tried to squirm out, brushing and slapping against her furry leg, but she quickly tore it up as well.
The ground then burst apart completely, and she had to dash further into the crater as red goop oozed out into her former position. The fox frantically hopped across the environment, avoiding the splotches of toxic material, and ultimately jumping up to a nearby stony protrusion in the ground.
It seemed dormant enough to be safe for the moment, so Renamon remained there in a contemplative crouch. She observed as the goop and tentacles continued to spread out, visible no matter where she looked. They seemed intent on simply covering anything they came across - doing a good job so far in her eyes - behaving like lifeforms driven as much by impulse as any sort of active consciousness.
As the perched vixen further surveyed her surroundings, Renamon didn't know what to think of any of this. None of what she was looking at had been here prior to her failed escape, that much she knew. The safest bet was that it was this mysterious D-Reaper's doing. But that was not only an assumption, but it was only one of many questions. How long did it take to get this way? How much longer would it take before it got worse ... Would it get to the point where she couldn't possibly make it out at all? Could she even make it out now?
A pit formed in her stomach as she realized she now needed to navigate her way through it all. It didn't matter that there was no exit in sight; staying in place would clearly get her nowhere. Plus, it would be dangerous, with the deadly goop, tentacles, and whatever strange creatures were lurking around.
Her icy-blue eyes hardened. There was no telling what she was about to face ... and she had to do it all alone.
Why did she suddenly feel like that's what her whole life had become?
Renamon ultimately decided to head towards what could only be described as an elaborate, cavernous maze. Long, branching, zig-zagging pathways were abundant, with the towering walls keeping anyone from knowing where they were while inside. Surely, getting lost was a strong possibility. However, out of everything the Digimon could see, it appeared to be the area least populated by threats. So, with great reluctance, she took the option.
Unfortunately, it didn't take her too long to find herself at a loss with where to go. The walls were too steep for her to scale, forcing her to work her way through this labyrinth of rubble. With each dead end and looping path she came across, the vixen's concern gradually grew, as did her irritation. She crossed her arms and stood tall, trying to keep herself composed.
Worse than any navigational issues was the fact that, while this area wasn't as dangerous as other sections of this wasteland, it wasn't free of peril by any means. It was changing before her at seemingly every turn. Every now and then she would have to prevent a massive falling blob-like orb from falling onto her, watching as it splattered and spread the toxins upon impact.
She also had to be on constant lookout for those tentacles. At one point, in an intersection of the maze, she came across a "river" of the red appendages, cutting straight across her route ahead. They were mostly dormant and relaxed, but a few still slithered along the trail from left to right and vice versa. It was an unsettling sight to say the least, one that elicited memories of Renamon's encounters with Sandiramon, or the army of Parasimon and their many tendrils.
A few of the tentacles deviated from the crowd, now heading in her direction. She leapt over all of them and landed on the other side with a smooth arc, leaving the tentacles grasping at nothing but empty air. Looking at their coiling tips, Renamon shuddered internally at the thought of being within their grasps once again. So, she quickly moved on, especially once more tentacles came towards her new position.
The other major threats she'd been facing were those Pendulum-footed beings she'd seen glimpses of earlier. Such as right now, after rounding a corner and being caught by surprise as four of them jumped her. They swung their pendulums at their unsuspecting foe, knocking Renamon into a wall. Grasping her shoulder for a moment, she saw them all preparing to swing again. But she leapt up and into the center of the group, proceeding to slash, punch, and kick at all of them. She spun around to knock down two of them at once, and as a third one swung at her, she grasped its sickle, jumped up, and dug it into the nearest hard wall of rock.
She then sprang off it with the tips of her toes, the jump being strong enough to finally get her above the maze. For good measure, she delivered a Diamond Storm while still airborne to the pendulum-footed creature to kill it.
As she now stood above the elaborate maze she'd spent so much time stuck in, Renamon scanned the land around her. Much to her chagrin, it appeared that this labyrinth had become significantly more corrupted since her initial entry. Pretty soon, even it would become far too treacherous to trek through. More bubbles of pinkish goop were popping up from the cracks and pits, with some bursting to spread the substance both on top and within the multitude of canyons. Tentacles crawled up the walls and began coating the ground, accompanied by more of those Searcher creatures flying around.
At this point, Renamon believed that the Searchers served as eyes for the entity or entities behind all this, as she would often find herself attacked shortly after being spotted by one.
Such as right now. To her dread, more of those tentacles were crawling up the wall she had just gotten over and making a beeline for her. She got moving and dashed across the maze. She made it clean over one pit after another, making sure to look well ahead of her to know what direction her best option would be.
What she failed to account for when making her next jump, however, were the tentacles that suddenly shot up from the abyss and deftly coiled around all four of her limbs, her chest, and her neck and mouth, while she was in the middle of the jump. With a muffled gasp, she was pulled back down into the darkness, reaching for the sky with a coiled-up paw.
Leering at the assailants, Renamon managed to twist her constricted body in midair, fighting against the tendrils' pull to perform a Diamond Storm. As she grunted through the coil around her mouth from the effort, she gratefully witnessed the tentacles getting sliced up, freeing her in time for her to land on her feet at the bottom of the pit. The fox Digimon raised her arms in front of her body while crouched, in case more tentacles tried to follow up.
Surely enough, they did. As did more of those Pendulum Feet beings, slowly but surely sauntering over to her.
While they wouldn't put up too much challenge, Renamon didn't want to take the risk, especially with the threat of being wrapped up again. So she fled into another tunnel close by, while the tentacles and Pendulum Feet chased her. They got in each other's way as they all tried to fit through the tunnel's narrow entrance at once. This slowed them down, but Renamon knew they would untangle themselves in due time, so she kept on going.
Hopefully they lost her by the time they ventured in.
Before Renamon now lay another large cave, this one fairly spacious compared to the more confined ones up until this point. The cave was covered in stalagmites, stalactites, and most alarming of all, a ten-inch-deep pool of water that was dyed a poisonous-looking light red, coating almost the entirety of the floor. Tiny blobs rose up from it, popping on the stalactites and sprinkling on the immediate vicinity. Despite the material being diluted in water, it wasn't a safe bet that standing in that pool wouldn't do someone harm.
Renamon eyed her way out of here on the other side, and proceeded. She jumped onto the nearest stalagmite tip, landing with an admirable amount of ease. She needed not even a moment to align herself before hopping onto the next one, and then the next, so graceful and acrobatic was she. The only real challenge was keeping her long, furry tail clear of the toxic water when on the lower points. That, and when she was about to make one of her jumps, another large bubble rose up right in front of her, forcing her to remain on the spire until it passed.
With a nimble flip, she landed on a tiny island of land in the middle of the cave, one of the very few dry patches. From there, she surveyed the remainder of her path, planning out the jumps she would take and thinking over how she would react to whatever may be waiting for her at the other end of this cave.
That is, until her pointy ears picked up a very faint sound to her right ...
"... mmmnnn ..."
The fox looked over, body tense and ready to fight. She took one step back when she saw a series of more scarlet tentacles coming from a branching route and from the ceiling. But they weren't coming towards her; rather, they were all joined and tangled together in a small yet bulky cocoon ... one that was weakly shifting and moving.
Another muffled sound came. Sounding like it was coming from inside the cocoon. "nnph ..."
Renamon's eyes shot up. With caution, she quickly made her way over to the gently writhing form.
Clearly, she had not been the first to end up trapped in this hellscape. Nor the first to experience these tentacles' heinous grasps. But whatever poor Digimon or human was wrapped up beneath this layer of coils had not been as lucky as her in escaping them.
"It's okay," she said. Despite the compassion she felt for this victim, her voice remained as calm and level as usual. "I'm going to get you out."
She couldn't be sure if this being heard her, but the cocoon shifted a bit more enthusiastically in response, the sounds from within getting a little louder. Not wanting to keep them waiting any longer, Renamon extended her arm forward, about to tear these tentacles apart.
But just as her claw barely grazed a coil, a new set of tentacles suddenly joined their ilk from up ahead and wrapped around the bundle in front of her. They tripled down on the layers of constriction around this unknown being, and its sudden frantic bobbing indicated that the captive was aware of this. Maybe they were crying out as well, but they were so heavily wrapped up now that any resulting screams couldn't be heard anymore.
The tentacles worked together to drag the helpless victim away from its would-be vixen savior ... while others came to deal with her directly.
Renamon's white wrists were seized and squeezed painfully by tentacles from above. "Ghagh!" she cried. She tried to bring her claws to them, but they pulled and lifted her arms up, preventing them from reaching one another.
Meanwhile, tentacles on the ground slithered up and wrapped both her tender thighs individually, then together, trapping her lower body in a heavy bundle not unlike the one that was just taken from her. The tentacles then weaved around her torso and through the fur on her chest, caressing her face and gagging her again, while the ones around her arms coiled further down them, approaching her shoulders.
Millimeter by millimeter, Renamon brought her claws towards the opposite arm. She used all of her muscle power, straining with every ounce of might she had, against the tentacles' resilient pull. If she couldn't get them free, she had no chance at escape! She lunged her arms and twisted her wrapped-up waist, garbled battle grunts escaping as she kicked her legs in their prison of shifting and squeezing red.
"Nnnrrrrmmmnnn!!"
And then, just as she felt the terrible grip around her whole body tighten to the point of breathlessness, her claws finally managed to sink their way into the dastardly coils. She gripped them fiercely and pulled them away, tossing them aside. Her newly-freed arm then made quick work in freeing the other.
Before more tentacles could come and make up for their fallen kind, Renamon urgently sliced and diced every remaining one off of her, allowing her lovely frame to breathe and be fully visible once more. She cut up each tentacle as it charged at her, both from above and below, until they seemed to finally exhausted their numbers.
Renamon sprinted away as fast as she could, retreating back to her intended path out of this cave.
It deeply unnerved her to have been so close to utter defeat, so close to possible eternity in the clutches of these coils. And, while she couldn't dwell on it in the heat of the moment, every second she spent with even a single one of them wrapped around her seemed to wear her down not just physically, but ... somehow, mentally. Her hope in escaping, her faith in her capabilities to do so, felt mildly compromised, even if it ultimately didn't stop her resolve in escaping.
That was the most important thing. Because if she didn't give it her all, she stood no chance.
Eventually, with a few more fights with tentacles and Pendulum Heads behind her, Renamon finally found a wall that was sloped generously enough for her to scale up. She had to squash a few rogue tentacles that emerged from it and behind, but was otherwise uninterrupted as she reached the top.
She found that she was thankfully well past that maze, back in an open area. But things looked even worse than they did before.
It looked like an entirely different world. So much of the environment was now coated in swirling black and blood-red material, including right at her feet. Judging by how she didn't seem to be harmed by it, it seemed safe enough to walk on. But it was a loud and clear statement that the D-Reaper - still assuming that it was indeed the culprit - had completely taken control of its new dominion.
Some of it had broken through the natural structures and busted them apart. Some completely caked itself over it instead, while some had oozed its way within. Sometimes this substance would burst up from a base to form new "towers", the tops of which spawned new Searchers and Pendulum Feet going straight on the hunt. The goop barrier over everything had also gotten thicker, even harder to see through, making Renamon feel even more imprisoned.
Slightly in the distance, she was also alarmed by the sight of a transparent, swirling, dark-red sphere, floating proudly near the top of the glob-like dome. Just by looking at it, Renamon got the suspicion that it was, in some way, the center of all this. The one in control, maybe the "brain" of this mysterious D-Reaper.
But whether that was true or not, just the sight of it, though simple and plain on the outside, was giving her a slight, inexplicable chill from within. She could feel her chest thumping faster, her nerves tensing up, a miniscule wave of misery beginning to wash over her. It was ... disarming. And she was still at least half a mile away from the thing!
Is there even hope for me at this point? she thought. What? No, why would I have such thoughts?!
One of the "towers" then emerged a few yards away from her. She took a few steps back and watched as a flurry of Searchers came pouring out of it, followed by a small group of Pendulum Feet. As soon as they spotted the lone vixen, they attacked. They kicked their axed feet at her and swung their sickled arms, and she took action to begin beating them all down. A duck here, a kick there, something that was standard for her as they dropped one by one. But more still came for each one that fell. One of them wound its corded arms around her knees like a set of whips, tossing her onto her stomach. She sharply bent her legs to yank the creature towards her and kicked out with glowing-blue feet, destroying it and getting the cords to loosen. She then took its dead body and used it as a weapon of her own, swinging it against the remaining agents, combining it with her own power and moves to take them all down.
But amidst this distraction, a legion of tentacles was showing up from all sides. They drew nearer as she fought off the Pendulum heads, wiggling and creeping along, excited for their next catch.
Luckily for Renamon, she managed to finish her fight as the tentacles were mere feet away from her, with no time to spare. As they all made their lunge, she levitated as she once again used a Diamond Storm against this swarm. The volley of pure destructive power soared across the region and into the sea of tentacles attempting to constrict her body. Some diamonds missed their mark, in which case she had to shred up the coils herself, but a majority of them hit dead-on, puncturing the tendrils and either sending them retreating or causing them to stop in their tracks.
And yet, after a few seconds, it was as if Renamon had done nothing at all! More tentacles simply slithered in to replace the fallen ones, ensuring the growing ocean of red didn't thin out.
Feeling an ill presence behind her, she whipped around and jumped over a tentacle that almost managed to pin down her arms. She weaved around and cut up the additional ones that tried to do the same, her body swiveling as one close call came after another.
Out of instinct, knowing she stood no chance here, Renamon sent herself flying back into the valley, hoping the tentacles would be less dense there. She was proven correct, as she observed them now blindly searching for her. She could see their bulkier roots from down here, shifting and bobbing about as their tips sought out their slim yet powerful prey.
Twisting her head, yet another cave entrance lay before her. While the last thing she wanted was to put herself back in an enclosed environment, as she looked back at the still-growing army of snaking scarlet, it was clear that the other direction would lead to instant disaster.
So, the yellow vixen carried on ahead, soon standing at the front. She stared into it for a minute, her apprehension giving her pause. Her cold blue eyes narrowed as she pondered what could be waiting for her inside this time. It was a gamble that it wouldn't be worse than what was behind her, after all.
The question was answered for her when yet another horde of tentacles suddenly shot out from the darkness.
Renamon had no time to react, as much as she tried, as the tentacles wrapped around her and yanked her inside. She was pulled onto her side as they very quickly bound her arms to her sides and her legs together.
"Mmmnnh!!" she growled as her mouth was again gagged by the putrid coils. Her spiked shoulders shifted and pushed, her round hips tossing and bucking, her toes futilely digging into the ground. The tentacles were able to completely ignore it and keep pulling her along at an uninterrupted pace, towards whatever destination they had for the squirming Digimon in their clutches.
They eventually brought her to a narrow trench in the path, where the walls jutted out. A giant boulder rested on top, partially off the edge opposite the bound and gagged Renamon.
With just seconds before she would be dragged past it, Renamon breathed heavily. She squirmed and positioned her wrapped-up body so that her shoulders crashed into one of the two protrusions, while her bound ankles made impact with the other. As a result, her momentum was halted. She had managed to catch herself and block her body from moving any further. The tentacles just kept pulling and pulling, persistent despite this newfound resistance.
Renamon squeezed an eye shut and grunted through the gagging tendrils as she strained to keep herself in place. She was heaving through her nose as she was bent at her middle, trying to pull herself back, worried that the might of the tentacles may snap her in half if given enough time.
Desperate to get free before then, she tried to multitask with struggling at the same time. But she was too tightly wrapped up, and each attempt to power or squirm her way out resulted in the crisscrossing tentacles gripping even tighter. Worse yet, more tentacles were now taking part, sickeningly coiling and sliding around her to aid in dislodging the ferocious fox. "Gummph!!" she cried.
They also were clearly losing their patience. Now, instead of merely trying to pull her away, they began to slam her into the two sides of the trench. They pushed her away a few inches before yanking her back harshly. This happened over and over, each impact more painful than the last as they used more and more force. They adjusted themselves to try and reposition her, and Renamon had to work to bring her bound body back, while enduring the blows, and the intensified squeezing, all at once.
"Mumnngh!! Rrmmng!!" Renamon's cries were muffled, but made it clear how much she was suffering. Her long, curvy body fought and thrashed in the shifting, constricting hold, her legs and shoulders desperately clinging to their anchors. It was buying her time, but getting the Digimon no closer to freedom, and she couldn't hold out much longer.
What neither she nor the tentacles were aware of, however, was that all this pounding was slowly shifting the massive boulder from its resting place above. It was inching a little further to the edge each time, the forces of gravity coming closer to taking over and bringing it down.
With the most excruciating slam of her body yet, Renamon screamed through her gag. But it was worth it, as this was the final push needed to finally send the boulder over. Its hulking weight crushed the growing army of tentacles all at once, squashing and severing them in an instant, as well as blocking any more tentacles from reaching their vixen.
Unfortunately, it also smashed through the floor of this tunnel, causing it to collapse.
The still-coiled Digimon slid down the fallen debris. As she hit the ground, the impact was cushioned by her thick blanket of tentacles. She rolled out of the way of the small mountain of rock that had been created, shaking her head and coughing through her clogged mouth as the dust invaded her nose.
With the grip on her loosened, Renamon managed to wriggle and push her way out of the slimy, severed coils, gladly leaving them in a lifeless pile. She gasped for entire lungfuls of air when she felt the pressure on her release. She rolled onto her hands and let out a coughing fit that wracked her body, jostling her dirtied, ruffled fur.
The rubble and giant boulder had managed to likely save her life. But they were now also blocking her from going back up. Not that she was guaranteed to go that way anyway with the snaking entities still up there. But the option was gone either way; she was stuck down here. Forced to venture through the deepest recesses of this transformed land she'd faced yet.
Another tendril coiled around her right shoulder, and another tried to go for her outstretched legs. Renamon sliced the first one and stomped the other into the ground, before ripping it up as well.
As much as she so dearly wanted to rest, that was a reminder that such a thing couldn't be done here.
Hesitation meant demise. Giving into weakness meant demise.
And yet, somewhere deep inside of the fox, a part of her was shouting at her that it wouldn't matter either way ...
Renamon kept her eyes narrowed and hyper-alert throughout her journey in this dark, deep, claustrophobic cave.
She was constantly on guard, constantly ready to spring into action at a second's notice. The Digimon was powerful, especially for her level, but with the sheer number of those foul tentacles and creatures that she was knew were lurking around down here, her chances of being snatched up were higher than she would like to admit.
The tentacles in particular could be rather sneaky as well. In one instance, Renamon had completely failed to notice one lone one slithering towards her on the ground until it was wrapped around her ankle, twisting tightly. Her eyes widened as she kicked the gripping appendage with her other foot, only for it to hold firm and curl further up, disgustingly caressing and squeezing her large, supple yellow thigh. Sighing in annoyance, she simply reached down and cut it off.
She supposed every now and then, a lone hunter couldn't resist its chance at its prey.
There was a faint, red glow dimly illuminating the cave, creeping in through the cracks of its interior. As she went along, it gradually grew brighter, with a deeper shade as well, shining against the fur of her lovely face. It certainly made it easier to see around her, a life-saver with what she was up against. But she was also worried that its increasing strength meant whatever consciousness was behind all this was getting closer. And the implications of what that meant were far beyond anything her imagination could cook up.
There was also an ever-intensifying humidity, which seemed to be sapping away tiny bits of her energy with each passing minute. It almost felt deliberate, like the air itself was actively trying to wear her down in whatever minimal ways it could. Puddles of the pink goop were becoming more prominent as well, another hazard that would have been much worse had it not been for the light.
It all lent further credence that she was approaching the heart of the beast.
Further evidence came in how often the ground, walls, and ceiling erupted with more tentacles. Such as right now with the floor in front of her, which she jumped over before they got the sense to go after her. As they spread out and slowly wriggled about, more roots were swarming the entire interior of the cave around her agile form. They were building entire layers over the natural formation, coiling it up on the inside and out, drowning all color until nearly everything was red.
And as many of them swerved their way towards her, Renamon had to constantly leap, slide, and slash her way through to avoid being caught. She left a trail of lifeless, severed appendages and tentacles that missed their target in her wake, with the latter trying to smoothly correct themselves and redirect back to her. They were giving the mighty vixen very little time to rest, if any at all.
The closed-in space around her was now completely covered in the slithering tentacles! They all weaved and crawled over, under, and between each other like a nest of snakes. They left Renamon with nowhere to run and with constant movement all around her. It was complete chaos!
She leapt into the air and unleashed her biggest Diamond Storm yet. The shards flew out in every direction in front of her, piercing the flesh of the tendrils and clearing out a cluster that blocked her only path ahead. She took the opening immediately, knowing it would be very quickly covered with more of the creeping entities.
As time went on - whether minutes or hours, she didn't know - Renamon didn't feel like she was getting any closer to any form of a way out. She pondered how much worse things were getting outside. Would she be trapped down here even if there was an exit, simply from how overwhelming the takeover from this D-Reaper was? Would she be wrapped up by tentacles the very second she got out, or sliced apart by an awaiting onslaught of Pendulum Heads?
Worse yet, she was noticing how much more impatient the tentacles seemed to be getting with the Rookie. Many still remained disturbingly quiet and slow, but others were getting hasty. They were starting to rush at her more swiftly, allowing for almost no time to avoid them from the moment she saw them. Sometimes she would have under half a second to deal with one wave before another came, scarily close to succeeding in wrapping her up nice and helplessly.
More of those Pendulum Heads were also swarming her. They went down fairly easily individually, but they were another obstacle to deal with and a distraction that made things that much harder. At one point, she was surrounded by a trio of them, simple enough to beat on their own. But they were accompanied by tentacles in between them, so she knocked the closest Pendulum Foot back with a swipe and then fled, stepping over the red roots, causing them to flail in response.
Her feet urgently carried her along, until a mass of tentacles burst out in front of her. By the time she managed to stop herself, she was right on top of them. They wrapped around the entirety of her lower legs and yanked her down onto her knees.
Renamon grunted as they gripped her, cringing as they started to crawl up her individual upper legs. She saw tentacles were coming quickly from the left and right, as if aware that a potential new victim was subdued. So, positioning her hands in front of her chest, the yellow vixen sliced the incoming coils apart, before having to do it again for the next ones.
For nearly half a minute, she defended herself continuously, each time a coil tried to succeed where the previous one failed. As she felt her legs squeezed more, she had to twist herself to the left to tear down some tentacles, then to the right to do the same, all without any time to go for the ones holding her down. Until, finally, she received a very brief window of reprieve, and used it to slash at the gathered tentacles grasping her legs.
Once she was free, she panted as she got to one knee. But of course, another small group of tendrils then came at her, forcing her to narrowly dodge to the side of the tunnel. A lone tentacle from the wall managed to slink itself around her at the hips, and she cut it up quickly.
I'm barely keeping up with how many of them there are! she thought. Continuing her defense, she used her Diamond Storm against some more that grabbed her at the forearm. Every time I destroy one, two more take its place!
"Indeed."
A sinister, booming female voice suddenly echoed. "You're not going anywhere."
It startled Renamon, causing her to freeze for a moment.
"Aghhh!!" She cried out as another wave of tendrils rushed over her feet, with multiple shooting up to grasp at her arms. She tried to cut them all up, but enough were able to break through and snake their way up securely. Her legs were once again constricted, and tentacles crawled up her torso before winding their way around her shoulders. From the ceiling, more emerged and wrapped around her neck, squeezing so tightly that it caused Renamon to choke violently.
Even more tentacles crawled their way around her. She tried to keep her arms up, but a few well-coordinated loops around her shoulders got them down, and the tentacles simply worked down from there until both arms were bound to her sides. They coiled over her clenched fists, heavily concealing the entirety of her body from the neck to the thighs.
There were too many, all binding her at once! Nothing could be done as from every direction, they piled onto their new vixen captive! As a few coils gripped the top of her head, the mass of tentacles inched its way up over her mouth. And no matter what she tried, how she moved, Renamon was utterly helpless to do anything about it.
"Mmmph!! Nnmmumph!!"
"The D-Reaper senses something within you ... something that will make you perfect ..." the voice said. Whether or not she was directly controlling the tentacles, it was clearly happy with seeing the mighty Renamon in their clutches.
"Nnrrrgh!!"
Another flurry came forward, wrapping around her knees and squeezing them together. She tried to spread her already-wrapped feet apart to get maintain a standing stance, but they too were swiftly coiled together. Renamon thrashed and lunged her constricted body, trying to swing her claws but utterly failing with her forearms so heavily bound.
Soon, only her eyes, ears, nose, and toes were visible, the only things exposed and not covered in tight tendrils. A sea of red surrounded her completely, and from it, each individual snaking coil wormed its way over to join in, having a mind of its own but working together to capture the voluptuous vixen. The cocoon still had a similar shape to her curvy body, even as more and more were piling on to make her prison bulkier.
"RMMMPH!!" Renamon let out a muffled scream and fell to her knees as the dozens of tentacles holding her tightened their grip. She convulsed and tossed herself from side to side, front to back, but the lack of any effect it had was laughable.
Renamon fell onto her front, choking for air and struggling underneath the mass of constricting coils. She tried to grasp them with her claws from the inside, but they were completely pinned. With an almighty push of her toes, she launched herself off the ground, trying to hop away even in the grip of her captors. But she was slammed back down with ease, and her toes were then covered as well.
The tentacles began dragging her across the rocky cave floor.
"Come. Come and be the D-Reaper's."
Renamon grimaced as more and more tentacles swarmed her body, slithering around her slender form. She tried in a futile effort to get them away by kicking out her legs and thrusting her hips. But due to the sheer number of snaking roots restricting her, she was attacking too slowly and too weakly to do anything.
She was dragged past multiple Searchers and Pendulum Feet, who watched the newest unwilling resident of their home go by. Renamon glared fiercely at them with a muffled growl, before another tentacle came into her sight and smoothed itself over her beautiful blue eyes.
By now, the only parts of her visible in any way were the white tips of her long ears, her tail, and her nose, which was desperately flaring up for air as she felt herself being crushed. The Digimon, once standing so tall and proud, was now reduced to the very same state that unknown victim from earlier was: in a sturdy, thick cocoon, blocked off from the nightmarish world around her, unable to do anything but wiggle and moan.
As her lungs burned for air, she was dragged further and further away, more tentacles still piling on. Her senses grew dimmer as their shifting grip just got worse. Her entire body screamed in agony from the sensation of the smooth, warm, unbearably tight coils, and her breaths were beginning to feel like they could be her last.
Finally, after a far longer fight than most individuals would be able to put up, the last of her feeble, worthless squirming and struggling subsided. Her grunts, though already barely audible with the multiple layers of tentacles gagging her, faded out completely. Her vision, already blackened from the coils over her eyes, went completely numb.
The tentacles still proceeded with carrying her away, a limp core of yellow in an unyielding cocoon of red.
Little did Renamon know that the consciousness behind this abduction didn't intend on killing her ... it had something far worse in mind.
So, when I asked you to bear with me on the ending to the last story, everyone assumed I meant that the cliffhanger would continue in this one ... Nah, I meant bear with me if you're confused as to how we're suddenly picking up in a completely different situation. XD Believe me, it'll make sense, just not yet. ;P For now, we watch as Renamon is put through a trial of endurance this time, facing tentacles at every corner until they ultimately succeed in making her theirs! This was tied with Web of Alliances as the installment I was most excited to do, as it's the scenario I've fantasized her being in the most. In fact, some of the text is taken from a fun little prompt I privately wrote many years ago. To now have it in an actual, full piece here is amazing to me and shows how far I've come from the person who wouldn't share this interest with anyone! :D
As for the D-Reaper itself, for those who don't know what it is, hopefully that mystery is part of the fun, as you know as much as Renamon does. For those who do know about it, you'll notice that I took a lot of creative liberties with how it operates in the Digital World. In the show, it basically deletes whatever it comes across. Here, it's closer to a transformation, my way of getting Renamon in an environment like this.
And yeah, this part was by far the longest of the anthology! I was worried it'd be a little extra, but not to this degree! And true, there are stretches where Renamon isn't in bondage that don't really need to be there, but because of the atmosphere I wanted to create, a place that doesn't contain instant downfall but has it almost everywhere, and showing Renamon be capable enough to get through it for this long, nearly failing multiple times, and ultimately going down ... to me, that makes her bondage all the more worth it. The anticipation of seeing tentacles moving and knowing that they could snatch someone up makes them so much fun to me even if they don't succeed. I did a very similar setup to this a couple of years ago with Captive of the Jungle, having Simba trapped in a forest of living vines going after him. Except this hopefully upped the ante on that concept. What can I say, it's one of my favorite kinds of things to imagine! :D
As indicated by the title, this is a Part 1 of this particular story, with Part 2 to follow. And this time, we will pick up from where this leaves off! And those who know the show can probably guess what's in store for our lovely vixen!
But until then, thank you for indulging in this long stretch of tentacle action! While this and the previous chapter were more focused on action and suspense, next time will be the deeper dive that brings a lot of what we've seen Renamon go through together. It'll be the final main story of this whole series, with an epilogue probably following after.
I'd love to know your thoughts on this, so please feel free to share! :D

Hmm... It would seem that the moment I read up how this 'D-Reaper' was affecting and altering the environment of the Digital World, I had to find some fitting music to play along with it... And then I remembered Phazon Mines from the first Metroid Prime, specifically Level 1 for the first half and Level 3 for the second half!
Level 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q46jsUerY9Y
Level 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHSxfcOFNaM
As for this post in particular... Just like my song choice, it was pretty unnerving and sinister to read in a sense. This is one of, if not, the biggest challenge you've put our dear li'l vixen of a Digimon through! Traversing the ever-changing landscape all whilst avoiding the constricting tentacles and blob-like orbs and even the room with tainted and toxic water felt pretty daunting just from reading it! I can only imagine what I'm supposed to be looking at, and it'd probably be even worse than what I'm thinking! And to top it off, Renamon's doing all of this all by herself...!
It's a pretty big wonder that she managed to last as long as she did! I thought thing's were over for the yellow-furred vixen the moment she approached that one cave that had the tentacles shooting right out of the entrance and wrapping her before she had a chance to even react, but it would seem the time and place for her capture had to happen in a more...'fitting' scenario.
And what a scenario that was! Getting tripped up by the tentacles and pulled down to her knees in a kneeling position as more attempt to take advantage of her getting pinned was already a great set-up! And then there came the voice of the new entity...! And so startled by this new presence was Renamon that she completely drops her guard...and pays a hefty price for it in many a tendril burying her yellow form into a sea of red...! Pure poetry, right there! The only way that would've been made that better was if they slowly began to submerge her into one of those orbs; though I'm assuming that'd end rather poorly for Renamon, so...! ^^;
Can't wait to get to Part 2 and see just what the D-Reaper wants with Renamon! Until then, let's keep her nice and snug inside that blobby cocoon of red coils; where she properly belongs, I imagine...! XD

Wow, very fitting choices! And ones that I actually know beforehand for once! XD Level 1's works for a more urgent kind of creepy, and Level 3 a more dramatic type like when she's seeing the unknown captive.!
Oh, it's no doubt the biggest one! Makes the simpler days of battling a spider look mild! Part of what made it so long was trying to build up the transformed environment, as that kind of thing really boosts the perils within to me (the problem being I find environments tricky to properly portray, as you know!) It's meant to feel eerie and unnatural, making you feel just how on-edge one would be when forced to go through it all.
It's safe to say that I'm forcing her to prove what she's made of even if she gets caught! And granted, that instance of her escaping the tentacles from the cave entrance was a matter of luck as much as her resistance (not to take anything away from her; she needed to make the first move to start the events that got her out of there!). But that was partially my way of showing just how easy it is for any poor soul to be captured down there. The more close calls she has, the more we get the danger ... and the more bondage we get, of course!
Glad it met your approval there! Again, you may think that being tripped up would be the moment that got her captured, but that came just a bit later. As I said, getting wrapped up here is so easy that just one tiny little second was a big enough window to end Renamon's hopes of remaining free! Lol, yeah, if they brought her inside those orbs, she would likely miss out on the experiences lined up for her next! ;P
Thank you very much for commenting! This didn't seem to take off like I thought it might, so getting your approval on this part is extra special to me! You can bet that those snakey coils are far from finished with the lovely yellow fox in their grip! ;)

It's been FOREVER since I've played my copy of the Metroid Prime trilogy...! I would really love to get back into them someday, though, since they're what got me into the franchise to begin with! Also, I thought they'd be super fitting considering what you were going for with this story...as well as how it fully describes it just as much as the living space radiation the area's named after...! :)
Very much so! And as someone who has a pretty easy time visualizing environments in my head and writing them down, I gotta say you pulled it off really well here! Couldn't have explained it better, myself!
Good point, there! And I'm sure that she'd be asking for quite a reprieve when this is all done and over with... Too bad for her that it's only just beginning, if the ending to this Part's any indication...
It almost kinda reminds me of that time I mentioned a certain segment from a game I played that has usually scared and unnerved me for years, really... There's this scene in the cave where the characters think that they've beaten the monster that's attacking them, and at first, it seems that thing's have cleared up... But the moment the two of them get separated, the monster strikes again, kidnaps my ally, and continues on taunting and mocking me like nothing even happened! I'm getting some serious Crawler vibes from that voice, albeit with less of a condescending, jeering tone, and more of an unfeeling robotic resonance...! Still pretty creepy, nonetheless!
You're welcome! ^^

I've been going through them in preparation for the new game, and they've held up pretty well. Wouldn't have connected their tracks to anything I write, but now that you have it makes way too much sense.
Thanks for that reassurance!
Well, as you saw, it's far from over at this point.
You got it pretty spot-on with the more unfeeling vibe the D-Reaper's voice is meant to have. And sounds like a really tense moment that matches the same kind of vibe: one single moment of non-diligence brought everything downhill so quickly!
Thanks for that reassurance!
