It's funny. I previously posted a cartoon about someone wearing socks with sandals, and several people agreed that that's bad. Now, I predict no one's going to say white after Labor Day is bad. Why the hate for socks & sandals? It's no different than this!

White suits are ALWAYS cool.

Socks with sandals are just weird. But if someone wants to wear them, good for them. They're going to get some weird looks, though.

Not entirely! The 'no white after Labor Day' thing is fairly-well documented as an arbitrary, class-based rule intended to distinguish people with second homes and fancy summer outfits from those without. My research on socks with sandals (10 minutes on google) is less conclusive, but the two main reasons seem to be: (1) it just looks weird; (2) socks interfere with the functionality of sandals, by not letting your feet breathe. So, unlike white after Labor Day, not wearing socks with sandals isn't entirely arbitrary.

Okay, but what puzzles me is how *mad* some people get about it, talking about socks with sandals as though it's a crime on par with kicking puppies or flashing nuns. And I never know how serious they're being!

Fashion Faux Pas

Looks more pearl grey on my monitor, but your mileage may vary. (One of the reasons white was worn during the summer was, of course, that it's a warm-weather colour, at least in the Northeast. I suppose in Texas, you could wear white longer to be cool.)
