This morning was unusual, Sakda thought. It was not dawn yet, Majjari woke him and said something like today was going to be busy for her, he and other male should tookcare of themselves. Then they were took to a deserted field not faraway from the cathedral. With only little light from a lantern she was holding, they set off for a field covered with overgrown and shrub, the field was abandoned for some time.
When they arrived, the sky was partially lit by dim orange sunlight. There was no other lioness around. Only old warehouse at the end of the field. Majjari opened the cracked wooden door making creaking sound from rusted and worn out bronze door pivots. Inside was dark, the air was filled with old musky scent. They saw nothing except a big object covered by canvas. Dust flew all over the place as she merticulously removes it. One of the lion sneeze “I’m not good with dust” Sakda said.
Hema whizzed his nostril “What are we doing here in this old field, mistress”
“Since when do you call them mistress?” Arthid asked his companion surprisingly. Does this meant he admitted them? They’re their abusers not mistresses, he thought.
She don’t mind them at all and clearly she was hurry. What she revealed under the canvas was a big plowshare and a wooden tool box “Everything you need is here. All you lions need to do is simply work on this field. First you unroot the overgrowns, then prowl this field, sow the seed and flood it. Here’s some rice seed for you” Majjari gestured them to a big plowshare and dropped a seed bag from her back. “Quick, help me remove this big plowshare to the field”
The plowshare was not too heavy for the strength of three lions and one lioness. Shortly after they made it to the field “I need to go now, before somebody notice us” Majjari said, extinguished her lantern since the sky was dim enough and started to leave. “Wait” Sakda halted her “What’s this all about, why do you take us on your own, is there other lioness know about this?”
Majjari answered hastily “You need to be hurry sowing the seed. Make it done before someone caught you. I have no time to explain, but if you don’t want to be breeding slaves all you life, do it and make it quick, for your own good, brother” She went off as she finished, hurried through the passage the came.
Arthid yawned “Now brother? Did I missed something” Sakda and Hema staring each other “Well, I can explain. If she said it’s for our own good, she meant it. I trust her.” Sakda said.
The field was vast for them three but they need to took Majjari word literally, which meant what they had to do growing something in this field. After some hard work the major overgrown was cleared and water canal digged the morning sky turned bright already.
All of them was getting tried “Oh, she don’t leave some food and water for us” Sakda said looking at the cleared field and the plowshare “I don’t think we can do this without something to eat” He sat down at a nearby tree taking deep breath and closed his eyes “What’s the point of doing this anyway, just working on a field make us free again? I think not”
“It’s you who trust her at the first place, and now you’re the one who complain the most” arthid said. He was equally tried, he’d never know what this seemingly futile act would lead him but he’d seen Sakda’d been so confident in it. He belileved in his decision, that’s why he get alone with no objection. “On your feet Sakda we have a long way to go”
“You guys come quick, someone is watching us!” Hema said startled, as he saw a lioness peeking them through a shrub “where?” Arthid asked him. Hema gestured his head to the shrub “Over there did you see that darkish lioness?”Arthid noticed her “ I think I remembered her, she was the one giving us water when we’re....eh....first here” he made a low growl at her, declaring her presence being known.
The lioness paced toward them in no time, Sakda who was lying under a tree sense the vibration as she came close, he opened his eyes to look “Hey, hello....oh you’re the lioness who soothed us that day! Thank you very much” Sakda was on his feet again cleaning the dirt out of his body. his tone tone came straight again at her presence”What’s you name”
The lioness smiled she said “I’m Nilla I welcome every lion. I’d said it’s an incredible sight to see lions work in a field. Do you know lion don’t allowed to work, they only allowed to breed”
She impressed Sakda as she was few lioness here who didn’t see them as objects. Her words and manner, she hadn’t demand anything from them and allowed them to be themselves. “Why we can’t do any work, aren’t we slaves who need to do anything as commanded?” He asked curiously thinking what are they actually; a slave who is treated well then a sex slaves and now a slave who don’t have to do any work, this is eccentric.
She brought out big loaves of bread from her sac and also a bladder filled with water “You’re all tried, feast on these and I will explained”
All the lions gathered for their breakfast then she explained “In this city captured lions were considered being only breeder. their only duty was to breed, giving females another generation of offspring. Lions can’t own anything, have no authority, and will. The pristresses will keep them safe and secure. As you can see there’s few of us here and too many land. Any property is acquired just by working on it. That means if I work to repaired some temple then I owned it I could use it as my on will. This applied to land too, like this field ; If I work on this field until the rice grow that I own it too. On the other hand, when I’m not working or living at somewhere anymore, it was returned to the public”
“Yes?” Sakda said chewing a big mouth full of bread and drink some water “So now we own this field? and does that mean something?”
“Wait... we can’t even do work and we can’t own a thing, don’t you listen to her” Hema said Muffled also by his mouthful of bread
“But now we’ve been doing it” Arthid said.
Nilla bit her lip she thought she knew what was going on here. The tension, inside the cathedral she sense. The fact that they let the male out with no guard was weird enough but deliberately have them done forbidden thing for male “I think someone is helping you out, maybe, there’s some kind of rebel happening inside the cathedral. Can you tell me who let you come here?” She asked Sakda. He answered “It’s Majjari, she led us here all by her own, secretly of course”
She was silence for a while, listening to chewing and slurping sound from feasting males. Depth in thought she knew that someone, this pristress Majjari, might want to challenge conventional code and give the whole new status for the lions. As she noticed how urgent the situation was she said “Oh you lions need to be hurry, finish the jod before someone else see what you’re doing! and let no one know I’m helping you today”
“Sure my lady” said Sakda muffled. Nilla looked all around and stride away. Soon after they were full the lions regained their strength and continued the field work. They came to mount on the plowshare and pull it over the soil surface. anywhere the it passed, solid soil were break and pulverized. Slowly they proceeded, due to the heavy weight of the instrument and the hard soil.
Sakda exerted, his breathing intensified “My mane! This thing is heavy. Hoped this finished soon. After this we sow the seed and flood the field right?” Beside him was Arthid, he seemed not to bother much like Sakda “Yes, It’s like what Majjari said. So now can you explained that brother thing she said, what is it?”
“Well, I just find out, she is my long departed family since I was a cub, and It seemed my real family was here, I was born here” Sakda said, there was no more to hide. He told his friend about how he was raised by wolves and had never known his true family. The thing Manya said to him and how he knew Majjari was one of his sisters.
Arthid was astounded “You never told me before! You were raised by wolves, Sakda, and now you find your lost family here isn’t this something to be happy about” sakda sighed “I don’t know should I be happy with this, we shouldn’t be here at all, look how we’re treated. We have no dignity here, just their valued trophy” He looked to the ground and sighed “Even my sister, she was the best amongst them all, but still she doesn’t considered me as an equal lion”
With all the despair in his mind Sakda lost into his own thought. My sister, Majjari he thought even her can’t see me right and then who else is? there is no one, no lioness here to accept him as a proper lion other than a mindless breeder. At that moment he felt a warm hand on his shoulder “Are you allright? why you just be silent” it’s Arthid
Sakda looked at both of his friends in the eyes “Look we’re not shakled, and there’s no one here. I think we should escape” Arthid looked around and also he saw this was a perfect opportunity “At last you said it! I hated it here too. I’m with you Sakda” Hema looked at them inauspiciously. He was the one who wanted to have a pride, even though this is not the pride he’d imagined but he had already accepted it “Wait you two, I.... It’s not convinient to say but I want to be here, I love all the females especially that lioness....Swari. As long as I can breed with them , it’s not nescessary what am I, to them”
Arthid poked him at the cheek he laughed“It’s that mistress thing isn’t it” Sakda growled “Come on Hema, you can find better females than these. We’re going no where without you” Arthid and Sakda continued mocking Hema for a while they all laughed in the face of the serious situation. Soon Arthid told them what he knew yesterday that lions need to fight each other and he’d already trained to fight.
“What!” Exclaimed Sakda “We’ll be make to fight each other, we’re friends. Never will we fight eachother”
Hema frowned in distaste. He didn’t decided yet whether he would escape or not, but in the issue of fighting, he was strongly against it “Why would they think that, let’s see what will they do if I don’t do it”
“So.... Will we escape now. Listen Hema, If we can leave, we don’t need to deal with these nonsense any longer, included fighting. There’s no better time than this. It’s your call Hema, If you stay we do so but if you go we will go at once” Sakda said
