Whoa, super-retro! I guess reading about snail riders in an old Rifts book connected up with an old Fiend Folio favorite. (Cool, but makes little sense.)

Probably not a very fast way to travel. But I get the feeling there are some good points as well.

I am the only one I'm aware of who has ever used one of these in a D&D campaign.

It was one of those junior high campaigns so it was basically just a string of square rooms packed with my favorite stuff from the monster manuals.

If I remember right, they shot all its heads off with a crossbow and the most effective thing it did was curl up and play shrieker.

Its a comfort thing,.. before they had suspension,.. snails were the preferred manner of conveyance for all of upper Thergoria!
