well it is up for interpretation, i like to imagine her as a female who's lifestyle and genome led to an abnormally high level of testosterone production and thus the emergence of male phenotypic traits such as the crest and ample tail, or go the other way around and have them be a girl with abnormally high levels of oestrogens and thus some distinct female phenotypic traits
or you more simply just say she's a hermaphrodite and boom, works.
