Hey guys! I decided to finally release Chronicles of Acorn to the public, you can check out the journal I made for more info, but come play the Sonic fan RPG that's been in the works since 2017!
The build available is a very early alpha build, but it's playable and pretty fun if you like old school RPGs mixed with some new stuff! Plus it's Sonic! :D
It took years to come to this point and I don't know why we didn't do this sooner but heck with it! Better late than never. :) Come give the game and try and leave feedback, give ideas or just comment and support! If you want to see this project get new updates, please consider supporting me on patreon, as I'm a one woman developer and I need to pay bills and eat food! Buying new assets would be nifty too! Art was commissioned by me and completed by
My wonderful friend and partner in crime who is doing the art for my other more current project: PokeBuns!
To give the game a try, just join our public discord and find the Chronicles of Acorn section! :) I hope to see ya there! P.S. Fair warning! CoA features an unremoved scene of Sally naked! CoA is not an HRPG anymore, the next build will reflect that!

What everyone else said. It bucked up everything and the heroes vowed to fix it all something impossible because of why the Super Genesis Wave was even a thing for the comics, Ken Penders. I think Sonic lost most of his family as a result. then Before we could get #300 the comic was canceled then IDW got the rights to Sonic comics and rebooted everything for their own storyline different from the Archie universe.
Ken ruined a lot of stuff with his BS and is probably the reason Knuckles is the last Echidna...AGAIN as he I think own the others including Knuckles' girlfriend and wife in the 25-30 year later comics. Even tried to sabotage Bioware or something over the Dark Brotherhood because it had the Nocturnus Tribe in it, led by Imperiator IX. The Tribe Leader butthole responsible for the War with the Knuckles tribe that killed Chaos' friends, puked him off and had him sealed in the Master Emerald with Tikal for 4000 years after wiping out her tribe while the Nocturnus was banished to the Twilight Cage or something before then. He's the reason we never got a sequel and surprise surprise is why Eggman successfully took over the world in 5 years while Sonic and friends were away fighting IX to stop him leaving the game on an unresolved cliffhanger.

The comics themselves aren't bad, they're some of the best comics ever made for video games. What HAPPENED to the comics however is what's bad and a load of BS. Sonic and his friends deserved better and it doesn't help that Ken tried to sue Sega as well during all this which contributed to the eventual cancellation I believe. Like it might not the reason it was cancelled but rather one of many things building up that led to it. And the comics at least helped to expand on parts of the game that were never touched on or if they were it was only BECAUSE of the comics existing and doing it first that the games decided to do that or expand further such as the situation with the Warring Tribe we never got a name for til the comics I think then the Dark Brotherhood expanded on with finally answering it as the Nocturnus Tribe.
The comic was great, longest running comic series based on a video game character, at least 25 years, lot of us grew up reading it. That’s why it sucked that Penders ruined it for everybody. After he tried to sue for his characters, it just made it impossible for the series to recover, too many characters gone, especially when it came to Knuckles and his family. Was sad really.
Normally, I would say that protecting one's OC or maintaining the integrity of one's characters, OC or clones, is something that one should be defending at all times. Heck, I would be lived if someone took my OC and did something to them and doing so behind my back. But it sounds like this Penders person did more than destroy a good comic.
I wonder. Might have to look at the comic and the full breakdown of the Ken suing SEGA and such. Where can I find comic page 1?

Not to sure actually, but it’s gotta be archived online somewhere for free. Comic does start out a bit goofy, it was geared for kids after all, but around the teens or into the 20’s issues, around when Patrick Spaziante picks up doing the cover art (still one of my favourite artists), it starts getting better and the stories slowly become darker, more dramatic and mature. Art and writing really starts picking up around issue 50 and gets better as it goes. I was 5 when I got issue 1, so I literally grew up with it, as it matured I matured, so it’s super nostalgic for me. Just mentioning this cause it might be hard to get into from the starting point for anyone not a kid or not nostalgic for it, but there’s some gems in those early comics, so still worth checking out. A great artist picked it up around the 200’s or so, maybe earlier, brought some much needed consistency to it, cause it did have a lot of artists and writers come and go. Tracy Yardley though, stuck with it for awhile, I think up to the end actually, longest running artist on the book other than Spaz. Anyway…good book, and I can ramble for days about it. xD
Normally I’d agree with protecting OC’s, but the thing is, it wasn’t his comic, Sonic is not his IP. I’m surprised SEGA or Archie even let him have the rights to any characters he put in the comic, other big publishers sure didn’t do that, and as far I know they still don’t. Typically anything new created for an existing IP, becomes property of the owner for that IP. Tons of writers have created new characters for things like Spiderman or Batman for example, don’t see them getting taken to court over those characters, because the writers and artists typically understand, or are aware of it in their contracts, that any OC’s added are pretty much forfeit if they add them to an existing IP.
So I think that’s where the shock was, must not have had anything in contract like that, because it seems he won the suit with very little resistance. I’m really not sure on the full details, but it just seemed odd, I’m not really aware of too many cases like that in the comics industry, probably because the big names ran a tighter ship. So it was odd, and a bit cold, he had to know he was sabotaging a comic people adored. After 25 years in a successful story run, characters kinda don’t remain just yours anymore. But, of course legally that doesn’t matter, but have a heart ya know? Cut a deal or something, there was probably some agreement they could have reached. And it’s sad, because he’s not using them anyway, so he basically just took the kids toys away and then burned em out back in a barrel in front of them. Was a tragic way for the book to end and those characters deserved better, so fans are pretty bitter towards Penders.
Anyway, sorry for the ramble. Hope you find all that interesting. :)

From my understanding, they didn't want to give him the rights to the characters, but they literally had misplaced his contract at some point, as well as the contracts of most of the Sonic writers up until that point. This meant that without contractual evidence showing that the writers had agreed to give Archie and SEGA the rights to any characters and stories written as part of the comic series, the rights defaulted to the writers. This meant that any characters made specifically for the comic could have been claimed by any of the writers at any time. This is why not only Ken Penders creations got purged from continuity, but also characters made by other writers like Mammoth Mogul and Mina the Mongoose. The only exceptions being characters from the games, characters originally from the cartoons (which were contractually owned by SEGA, so they could be used as part of the Sonic license), and characters made by Ian Flynn, as they still had his contract on file. It was a real mess. The (fairly credible rumor) is that SEGA pulled the license from Archie partially because they were unhappy with how that whole mess was handled.
Sounds about right, thanks for filling some gaps. Just really sad, I loved that comic, even though I didn’t read it as much in my adult years, it was just nice to know those characters were still going, still had a place. Now they’re just on the shelf, collecting dust, and some just felt to me like they should continue on within the Sonic IP in some capacity. Sally especially, I feel like she’s more than earned a place in there somewhere. Tis sad, but hopefully they get a revival sometime down the road.
I read it some as a kid and enjoyed it, but had a hard time getting completely into it since I started reading around the 150s, and while I did obtain a lot of back issues, it was hard to figure out the reading order. I recently torrented the run, read through it in a month, and really enjoyed it. It's a shame what happened to it, and I was so hacked when the Mecha Sally and King Ixis arcs were just dropped because of Penders because it was going in some really interesting places. I really hope they bring back Sally, Bunnie, and Nicole in some capacity somewhere. They were all really interesting characters with their own internal struggles and arcs, and it's sad to just see them get left on the shelf for no real reason. It's a shame Bunnie in particular never was playable in the games, as she had a moveset that I think would be really fun to play in a video game.

You can download the entire comic run there, and here is a link to the recommended reading order as well. Not all of them are good, but some of the best Sonic stories of all time are in that run.
