Makeeto had just returned to her temporary hideaway from a scavenging trip. The location: her original home, a now derelict station floating within the depths of unclaimed space. She brought back several things: leftover supplies, mostly useable scrap, and a deceptively large data packet stored on a compact drive, its contents unknown to the hybrid creature. After organizing and storing her haul, she connected the packet to her computer system, being caught off guard by the almost immediate hard crash and subsequent reboot of the system. The screens came back to life, and she was greeted by a familiar animated 3D shape: the visual avatar of a certain administrative AI from her home station.
She could have sworn the lab teams had purged everything before evacuating, but it seems that they missed a very important spot. Her computer screens began to glitch out, the individual pixels fragmenting as the red cube avatar of the AI moved with life. Makeeto leaned forward, resting her head on her free hand as she stared at her screen with mixed feelings. One of the greatest tools that ensured her initial captivity sat right in front of her, but at the same time she knew that this tool was also responsible for her early development during her childhood. She wouldn't have been able to survive her capture and pressed service if it wasn't for this construct.
Still, she couldn't help but harbor some sense of concern. Even if this was a fragment of the original AI, that could mean there's still more information left on her home station. A chance to find out who was responsible for her birth and early years. Finally, a thread that lead back to the life that she had before it was taken from her by pirates.
Her thoughts were interrupted as the screen flashed. The AI had managed to take control of her system. A single message burned itself on to the screen of her central monitor.

Makeeto felt uneasy. She didn't know if she would be remembered or recognized. If this was just a fragment then the parts that recorded her time as an experiment might be lost or inaccessible. She'd have to find some way to verify her identity or be locked out of her system. One of the biggest threads leading to her past was right here at her finger tips, and despite the mixed feelings of anger, resentment, and for some strange reason: comfort, she had to establish some kind of connection.
Her screen went black for a moment before refreshing itself, another message being printed on the screen.

A lore piece done by
This is my first go at fleshing out the backstory for Makeeto/Mako via visual art. There are lots of gaps to fill in but it's my hope to get all of them done with an accompanying story. We'll see whether or not I get better at writing these things as they come ^^;
