Here is another sheath I've made for a different hatchet. My two lbs hatchet that I use for splitting wood and limbing has had a really poor sheath for a while now.
That little thing was made by a company called Hide and Drink, you can find them on Amazon. When I bought the thing I just needed a sheath for this hatchet and I didn't have the stuff to make one at the time.
I really don't like riveted sheaths, I think they're lazy and they cause chance for dulling the blade.
This is sewn with a slip of leather between the two lips where the edge of the blade goes. The slip is to act as a buffer so the edge can't cut the thread.

I just leave it as is, because it's just for protecting the edged tools. Putting oil on it makes it permanently malleable.
If I do a stain, I use the same stain I made for wood which is just iron/steel filings mixed with vinegar. It gives the leather a darker appearance as it does with wood. https://www.furaffinity.net/view/43731522/ Here is a razor I made a while back. The scales are made of oak which was a bright brown colour, almost looked orangish. I stained it with the iron oxide vinegar and it made it that lovely dark brown colour.
The leather is veg tan. Meaning it was tanned using like tannins from plant matter, like oak bark ground up.
