He hates you, you're a pure one (Guardian's of Ga'Hoole anyone?)
So we got a barn owl in at the Raptor Center. He has a broken wing that has healed funny(his right wing). Assuming it was broken in the nest, maybe stepped on and then mom kept feeding him and taking care of him so it healed. As you know though babies can't be taken care of forever so when he was too big he was kicked out.
He was found scavenging in a ditch. So sad. We took him in for surgery to break and re-set his wing after I took this picture. The vets are use to our birds in the office to fix but this is the first barn owl of the year we didn't have to Euthanize or have die because it was too sick so we drew a crowd. All 3 vets and the techs who were in the office had to come watch the surgery.
Hopefully he can fly when he heals. If not we can petition to use him as a teaching bird, he's young enough to train.
So pretty.
FYI: The scream of a pissed off barn owl in the small ICU room can make you go deaf. O.O

No link to more photos because this is it. My camera broke so it's hard to take clear pictures in the weird lighting you get at the raptor center and even the pics I did get I can't upload because since my computer screen broke too I don't have all my FTP server stuff to upload things to my website.

I've seen that video. A lot of owls can do it, we have a screech owl that goes skinny to try to be a stick when she wants to be left alone.
We had a young Great Horned Owl who would poof up.

We have 2 resident Screech Owls, 2 resident Great Horned Owls who have 6 foster babies that are all releasable this fall, another great Horned who was hit by a car and broke his leg who should be releasable this Fall and now the Barn Owl.
We had a Burrowing Owl that was hit by a car, he was released when he recovered. We had a Flamulated Owl come in too that hit a window but it didn't make it.

I lived on a farm in eastern washington (apple orchard) and came across a barn owl flapping its wings and rolling on the ground. I was taught that birds of prey are benefit to us, so I shucked my coat and wrapped the owl in it and took it in our truck to the same vet we took our dogs and cats to. It turned out it had been poisoned by Endrin which was an illegal rodenticide and we found our neighbor was using it. The bird was nursed back to heath at our expense at first but was refunded by the DNR. I wasn't popular with the neighbor because they got a stiff fine. While I lived on the farm, I did a lot of things to help birds get through the winter, and it was pretty satisfactory.
Birds of Prey are a great benefit for farmers and ranchers because they hunt rodents so efficiently. A lot of our birds when released go to farm lands because the farmers around here want them so badly.
I'm glad he made it, we haven't had any poison cases come in that we know of but some birds come in so sick they don't make it the night and we don't know what killed them. Most our cases are babies that fall out of the nest or a bird that got too close to people and ended up hurt because of it.
Both our resident Bald Eagles have been with us since the 80s and are both victims of gunshot wounds to the wing.
The saddest is the field across the street from the center use to have Burrowing Owls(and prairie dogs) when the people who owned it decided to get rid of the prairie dogs they poisoned them and killed off all the Burrowing Owls (and people wonder why poisoning prairie dogs to exterminate them is fucked up)... across the street from a Raptor rehab facility. -_-

We didn't support using poison control measures for rodents because it had the possibility of going up the food chain. My dad, while being an avid hunter also knew about the natural controls we had. My last year on the farm, we were doing a study with the WSU tree pathology center by using introduced lady bug larvae to control aphid infestations. It worked well, but our house seemed to attract swarms of the adult beetles in the eaves of our house.
He is gorgeous. I envy you getting to work with such gorgeous birds as the raptors.
And, yes, I'm becoming more obsessed with owls now thanks to you and referring me to certain books. On the third one now and almost done <-<;;; Allen actually sat through the first one but he's not having anymore of that. Not even pictures. I showed him the trailer to the movie though and he does want to see that. It's a matter of finding a 2D version cause I know he won't sit through a 3-D version the glasses would drive him made I'm sure.
And apologies for derailing comments on your picture. It's semi related? <-<;;;

I bet it is. I can only imagine how good it must feel, seeing those guys take their first tentative flights, off to soaring out into the wild again. Just thinking about it is damned near breathtaking. :] I have a ridiculous and vivid imagination. I totally support what you do/help do.
